Digestion
Posted Monday, April 4, 2011 at 2:20 PM
I had a bit of a problem digesting the oatmeal this morning--my stomach was doing weird things. I assume this is normal because its never seen what whole wheat oatmeal is. (I've never eaten oatmeal as a regularity before.) And....TMI alert....my poop came out smoother than normal afterwards. Eating lunch was fine, though stomach pains were still there--and I wasn't hungry. Anyone else having digestion problems?

That's a common effect of having more fiber than you're used to. And, oatmeal still has that effect on me even after months of more fiber (I only eat oatmeal on mornings I don't have to go anywhere for the rest of the morning!) But, yes, you are likely to notice that the 'outcome' of more fiber is a bit softer. The stool is not hanging out in your digestive tract for days or weeks. All the necessary stuff is removed and on it goes. If it sits around, moisture is pulled back through the intestinal walls (along with other things) so it gets 'stiffer'. --Deb R

I'm so glad you posted this, because so many people experience a shift and will be helped by your post. A little fiber goes a long way. I hear complaints about beans causing gas -- just remember a little goes a long way. When you are starting out, you could try things like having a 1/4 cup of beans vs 1 cup or mix the beans with a grain or vegetable which I sometimes finds helps me personally. Also, cooking your bean dishes (chili, stews, soups) with our sea vegetable friend, kombu can help with digestion. In fact, Eden Foods beans often have kombu already added. Jill Eckart PCRM

Additional cooking and/or mashing can also help with beans. In both cases, a lot of the fiber (which causes the gastro distress) gets broken down into more easily digestible form. For example, re-heating chili breaks the beans down further by a little bit so they are easier on the digestion. I've never been fond of the flavor of kombu, so that wouldn't fly at our house (there's something a bit too strong and sea-salty there). Maybe try other grains besides oatmeal for breakfast food. Cook (or reheat) brown rice in a saucepan with plant milk and a handful of raisins or other dried fruit (dehydrated apple bits for example) for a rice pudding like breakfast treat (sprinkle on a bit of cinnamon in the bowl as well). --Deb R

FYI on the TMI - poop should be smooth, leaning more toward soft than hard. BMs should also be in the shape of your colon, Ss and Js, not in the shape of rocks!
