Stess eating- craving for chocolates, cheese etc
Posted Monday, April 4, 2011 at 5:37 PM
Just finished watching Dr. Bernard's video on Stress eating (found on Lani's page) http://www.lanimuelrath.com/workoutroutinesforwomen/2011/stress-eating-no-wonder-we-crave-chocolate-and-not-broccoli/ What is interesting to note is that before I turned into a vegan, I would crave for chocolates, sweets like all others- specially when I am stressed out, having a bad day, tough exam ahead. But after going vegan over a year and a half, I actually do crave for my green smoothies. I do not know if consuming fresh fruits, vegetables (mostly whole natural stuff) has had a placebo effect on me, but really give me a plate full of veggies and I'll be very happy!!!

Hi vegankitty, There is some science behind this actually! It's all related to the "pleasure trap" in our brains - fat, sugar and salt all stimulate a dopamine release which gives us a temporary "high" and makes us want more of the food. So, if you're eating a healthy, plant-based diet, chances are you aren't eating lots of extra falt, salt and sugar. So, the brain can sort of reset itself, if you will, and find satisfaction in healthy foods. I know what you mean about craving green smoothies! I used to be a horrible eater, and now all i want are veggies and quinoa I'm glad you're having success on the diet! I was reading this article in the local news today - thought it somewhat relevant since the word 'craving' was in there. The main story states that "seeing a milkshake can activate the same areas of the brain that light up when an addict sees cocaine, American researchers say". My surprise is that the researchers are surprised when people such as Dr Barnard and Dr Furhman have been talking and writing about people being addicted to high fat unhealthy foods such as cheese for some time. http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/4849238/Surprising-discovery-in-research-addiction

I used to eat 1 or 2 chocolate candy bars Every day. Since the January 2011 Kickstart I have had zero and don't miss them.

I find myself craving leafy greens if we run out and I don't get them for a couple of days. I'll also grab a piece of fruit (or really WANT a piece of fruit if there's not one handy, like here at work) if I've been having lots of good but not-fruit/veg items (beans, whole grains, etc). Funny how tastes change. --Deb R

Wow good to know that many of you are able to break the addiction cycle!!! Thanks to the superior food choices that we make over others. In my office, whenever there is cake/ice creak etc, people will try their very best to lure me or rather make comments that why am I depriving myself of such 'pleasures'. I don't like to get into debate but I simply smile because I know that I do not want to be a slave to man made stress related diseases!!!

Maybe find a tasty vegan treat recipe and bring it in to work one day. For example, I'd bet you could mix up a fruit smoothie (berries, plant milk, agave) and freeze it into something akin to ice cream - although agave never freezes/crystallizes hmm... But you get the idea. We've got a lovely vegan organic Belgian chocolate shop near us so we go there for treats - no one I've shared them with thinks I'm missing out on anything! --Deb R
