Vegans have hearts attacks too!
Posted Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 10:40 AM

After a few months of vegan eating we had a heart attack in the house. I don't want to go into the messy details here, you can read about it in my blog if you want, http://twochubbyvegans.wordpress.com/2011/07/13/vegans-have-heart-attacks-too-apparently/, but this was NOT something I was expecting on a vegan diet!

I'm so sorry you guys had to go through this all but how wonderful to know that she is going to be ok. Blessings to both.

How traumatic for all involved. I certainly wish for speedy healing and complete recovery.

I have to wonder though if perhaps prior to a "few months" of a vegan diet, that the prior eating habits were the SAD way? (Standard American Diet). If so, I would then also wonder if that poor heart needed a bit more time then a few months of good eating to undo and repair the damage done in a lifetime? Nevertheless, I do wish the very best for all involved.

You must be in shock. I am sorry this happened. Please share your reflections with us as you have time to think things through.

I read your Chubby Vegan blog, and enjoy it. The current post was fascinating. Imagine a vegan with completely clean arteries having a stress induced heart attack!

There is no guarantee that healthy eating will absolutely prevent any particular health condition, especially in such a short time, and especially the health conditions that are caused by stress, not food. None the less, I am sure you will be getting more than your share of flack from friends and family about a vegan having a heart attack. It would be a great help to all of us if you would continue to keep us informed, both of your feelings and thoughts as you go through the coming months, and of the reactions of friends, family and the medical team.

We have a PCRM member doctor in our small town. I interviewed him recently for our documentary and he told me that there are three things that cause health crisis, not just food. According to him it is
1. what you put into your body... being vegan is the best response here
2. what you do with your body... it is being active and staying fit that is the best response here
3. what you have around your body, in your environment... this is what we call STRESS.

We plant-based, whole-foods, low-fat lifestyle folk can learn a lot from our chubby vegan friends and remember to take care of ourselves on all three fronts. I hope she lives to a hundred!

Thanks for posting your experience on your blog (and here for us to read!). I learned something today and it's only 6:45 a.m. Smile

Your post is a great reminder that we must stop the denial or become more aware of stressors in our own lives.

Balance in all things and all things balanced! (my boss says that, which is one reason why I admire him so much). I'll take that more to heart now.

I'm so glad MSP is recovering and will be back to her good self soon. Take extra good care of each other. Life can be scary - as you both have know only too well.

Cheers!
Mari

I finally had time to read your blog and I am so very sorry for the pain and trauma this has caused your and your loved one! That just had to have been so scary. With that, I would like to say again, that I wish you the very, very best and hope for full recovery and years of happiness and health.

I am also what I consider a chubby vegan. I am a 5'5" woman who weighs 170 (gasp). I eat very healthy but still have a high cholesterol (over 200). I often wonder what will go on with my own health. I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years and vegan off and on (more on than off) but solid for over a year now. Yet, in October when I had my cholesterol checked, it was 219 (dropped under 20 points since June.)

Unfortunately, I am still chubby with no end in sight. I have taken up Tai Chi to help me deal with the stressors of care for my sister (deafened by brain tumors) and my mother with cancer and a leg amputation looming ahead of us in August. So stress has a special meaning to me as well.

I wish you all the best with fast complete recovery.

Hugs
