Good Morning Vegan Fam; I have questions...
Posted Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 8:12 AM
Ok, so I was full after dinner but I around 10p I wanted a snack. I wasn't hungry but wanted to eat something. I chose not to and went to bed. Is there a certain time that we're not supposed to eat anymore. I've heard 8p. I've always heard that it's the combo of food that allows you to lose weight. Can I eat rice, potatoes, and crackers in the same meal and have legumes for a snack? And nuts/seeds fall under which new food group? What is the recommend. amt of water we're supposed to be consuming daily? When dieting, I would drink 64oz to 96 oz depending on whether or not I worked out. Thanks for helping me VEGAN family!!

If you are hungry, you should eat. I would just have a piece of fruit or something that is easy to digest. If I am hungry, I eat. If I am not hungry, I dont eat. Good luck.

I think as long as you're eating a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts/seeds you don't need to worry about which meal or how to combine them. Note that this plan calls for limiting nuts/seeds (but personally I do 1tbsp flaxseed and 1oz nuts daily). Re: water, you might find yourself needing less than before if you've increased your raw veggie and fruit intake. They have lots of water. I bet I still drink 6-8 glasses, counting herbal teas. (Caffeinated drinks don't count.) Hope that helps! Nice that you can recognize the difference between hunger and just "wanting to eat." That took me a while!

We don't recommend any special food combining. But, for weight control or weight loss you will want to pay special attention to today's webcast and information from Dr. Esselstyn because this will show you how to be really successful with going low-fat and losing weight. Jill Eckart PCRM

Jill.....how long do you suppose you have to be vegan to reverse the effects that the Doctor discusses? Are they reversable?

Here's more information about the diet Dr. Barnard talks about for diabetes (and some people, not all have been able to reverse the condition): www.pcrm.org/diabetes And, we tell people to start with a 3 week test drive, but for diabetes and other conditions you need to give it much longer to see results such as A1C come down and blood sugar controlled. So, I don't have a specific time frame for you. Jill

Combinations of food don't necessarily allow you to lose or gain weight – it mostly has to do with calories. However, having rice, potatoes and crackers all in the same meal is having a LOT of carbohydrates all at once. Are you getting enough non-starchy vegetables and protein to go with that? You may want to focus on balancing protein with non-starchy veg, starches, and fruit. This may also help you to feel full longer. 64-96 ounces of water is a good goal. That's what my doctor recommends, and she's very fit and healthy.

Jill mentioned on 3/3/10 that there was a webcast from Dr. Esselstyn. I missed that. Is there a way to still see it?

Do certain combinations not allow for better digestion? That is the point I have heard. I know proteins and carbs are digested completely different, so I heard that you should never combine those two. Just wondering if my advice was accurate. Thanks for anyone who can answer this. Maybe on the plant based diet, it doesnt matter.

Maybe on the plant based diet, it doesnt matter. From what I've read, the idea of combining/not combining was proven to be false. Perhaps Jill or Susan can weigh in on this, but I'm pretty sure this was outmoded in the last 20-30 years.

We're talking about two different things, I think. The idea of combining for "complete proteins" is outdated. No need to worry about getting all the essential amino acids in certain combos. But I think there's something to food combining for digestion, for some people. I feel like I have guts of steel after being a vegan for a couple of years now, but maybe I just naturally eat in a way that works for me, because I had trouble at first. It's always a good idea to listen to your body and adjust as necessary. For instance, some people have trouble with fruits and nuts in the same meal, etc. I wouldn't obsess over it or anything, but if you're having digestion trouble, it can't hurt to keep a log of your food and pay attention to what works and doesn't.

Re: the example of not combing proteins and carbs though, that would be impossible. All plant foods have both, in some amount, almost always with at least a trace of fat. Broccoli is nearly half and half, for example. Traditional food combos like beans and rice would also be out if that were so, and that seems intuitively wrong to me, since people have been eating that combo (both in Latin cultures and Asian ones (soybeans)) forever!
