Kidney Stone :(
Posted Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 10:31 AM

Hey people!

This is my 5th time on Kickstart! I have been a vegan for almost 2 years now. Just yesterday, I returned from the ER and they detected a Kidney Stone Sad Not sure why it happened as I do follow a healthy diet. My only culprit is I do not drink a lot of water. Maybe not even 2 full cups during the whole day. I live here in Denver, CO where it is fairly dry. I never really feel thirsty. I have done some research that says avoid or limit intake of spinach, swiss chard, rhuarb, tomatoes, strawberries! Eat celery, apples, grapes, cranberry. But any other dietary advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanks and Kind Regards,
Minotee

Ouch vegankitty, so sorry to here.

Here is a report from Doctor McDougall on Diet and Kidney Health.

He has other references too, this is for starters.
Searching the McDougall site brings up tons of info on multiple topics; just do a search for kidney stones. Here, I did one for you:

More information:

Kidney Stones: Nutritional Considerations

Kidney stones are increasingly common. Their incidence increases with animal protein intake, obesity, and poor fluid intake. A vegetarian diet may offer significant protection against stone formation.

In observational studies, the following factors are associated with reduced risk:

* Reduced intake of animal protein and sodium: High dietary intake of animal protein increases the risk of kidney stones. Compared with individuals eating 50 grams or less of animal protein per day, those eating the most (77 grams or more) have a 33 percent higher risk for stones. Compared with a standard (low–calcium) diet used for prevention of calcium stone formation, a diet restricted in animal protein and sodium reduces the risk for stone recurrence by half.

* Limiting oxalates: Oxalate–rich foods may contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Patients may benefit from avoiding foods high in oxalate, including rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, chocolate (especially dark), wheat bran, nuts, beets, and tea. Alternatively, certain food preparation methods may be used to reduce oxalate content. Boiling, for example, reduces oxalate content by as much as 80 percent.

* Calcium at mealtime: Interestingly, calcium intake from foods lowers the risk for calcium stones, presumably because calcium decreases the absorption of oxalates. Individuals consuming the greatest amount of calcium from foods have about a 30 percent lower risk for stone formation, compared with persons consuming the lowest amounts. In contrast to calcium consumed at mealtime, calcium from supplements taken between meals may have a very different effect and may be associated with an increased risk of stones.

* Limiting colas, coffee, and tea: Although further research is required, evidence indicates that cola consumption significantly increases the risk for stones. Individuals who avoid colas have been found to have a 15 percent lower rate of stone recurrence than those who continue to consume these beverages. Coffee and tea may also be associated with an increased risk.

* Overall fluid intake appears to be most important. Individuals who consume the highest amount of fluids each day (about 2.6 liters) have a 30 to 40 percent lower risk for stone formation than those consuming the least (about 1.4 liters).

* Vegetarian diets: Nationwide surveys have determined that the risk for stone formation is 40 to 60 percent lower in individuals following vegetarian diets. Vegetarian diets may lower the risk for kidney stones in a number of ways. These include the absence of animal protein and higher intakes of magnesium and potassium, both of which are associated with lower risk for stone formation.

Vegetarian diets also provide ample amounts of whole grains high in phytic acid, a chemical in plants that is associated with a 40 percent lower risk for stone formation in persons eating the most (about 900 milligrams/day), compared with those eating the least amount (about 600 milligrams/day).

It must be the season - my boss has been down with a kidney stone since last weekend. They checked yesterday and it had gotten itself 90% of the way out so they're letting it take its course, painful as that may be.

I had to start reminding hubby to drink water, just on general principles. To drink whenever he thought about it or passed the sink, not wait until he felt thirsty. After a while, it became a habit. Our son (he's 13 now - he was 12 during the prior kickstarts we've done) always has a reusable water bottle on hand and refills it as needed, several times per day. Since we don't stock fruit juices or other beverages (aside from almond milk for cereal, cooking/baking, smoothies and real hot cocoa in the winter), water is it.

sorry about your kidney stone! I am a NP and I tell my patients to eat their calcium and to stop supplements, no matter what all the ads on TV say!! they are not only hard on your kidneys(increasing you risk for stones) but also hard on your heart.

Thanks everyone! What supplements are you talking about? As far as I am concerned, I just take a Multi vitamin (Dr Fuhrman's vegan forumla) and I have just started a probiotic. I am a member on the Dr. Fuhrman's website and I read that vitamin b6 and a probiotic is really useful in controlling further formation of kidney stones and dissolving them (Specially b6). I do not take any other artificial supplements. My only complaint is I do not feel as thirsty as others because since I eat a lot of veggies and fruits throughout the day, the water content in them keeps me happy! But maybe not my internal organs! I have judiciously started drinking atleast full glasses of water with each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and taking sips of water in between. Also, Ill go easy on spinach, swiss chard. I love a variety of green vegetables so that shouldn't be an issue!

I have a similar story, VeganKitty. My husband developed an oxalate kidney stone after I went vegan (about 2 years ago) and added lots of beets, spinach, etc. to our diet. So not fair!

To treat it, I used lemon juice & chamomile tea, plus cutting out high oxalate foods. We also are doing a kidney cleanse right now from Andreas Moritz's The Miracle Kidney and Gallbladder Cleanse. It's very simple, just sipping on an herbal/medicinal tea blend throughout the day for 20 days. The recipe is in the book.
