What is your favorite vegan cookbook?
Posted Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 4:00 PM

I love cookbooks, it's safe to say I have a boarder line obsession. With that being said, what is yours?

I have many but I have a few that really stand out, well this week anyway.

Here they are:

La Dolce Vegan (great smaller portion meals plus a break down on how to make "cheese" and other staples)

Vegan yumyum ( I think that's the name, I let a friend borrow it)

Veganomigon (A collaboration of many chefs recipes)

The Accentual Vegan ( simple, inexpensive and easy to read)

I have others, but like I said, these are my "go to" this week.

Your stomach shouldn't be a waist basket.

Colleen Patrick-Goudreau has written some amazing books! I spent some time with her at the Farm Sanctuary Thanksgiving last year (even shot some video!) and the feast we had was straight from her cookbook.

A recent fave is Rip Esselstyn's Engine 2 Diet.

And Alicia Silverstone's Kind Diet is jammed with some goodies.

And of course anything by Doc McDougall - what a wealth of recipes to be found in the links in the website alone!

I love McDougal, I have his book too. I told you I really have a cookbook/health book obsession. LOL!

Great idea for this thread! I also have a cookbook obsession, and am always eager for new leads =)

I also love Vegan Yum Yum and Veganomicon! Some other favorites right now are Vegan Planet, 30 Minute Vegan, and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. And although it just came in the mail today.. I think Vegan Brunch is going to quickly be making the list too!

Vegan with a Vengeance
Skinny Bitch in the Kitch
Yellow Rose Recipes
The Simple Little Vegan Slow Cooker

Yellow Rose Recipes has a southwestern slant, but really good, basic recipes for sauces and gravies and just everyday useful stuff. I love it.

I love my crock pot and great vegan crock pot recipes.

Another vote for Veganomicon! I use that one the most but I also love The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen by Donna Klein.

How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman. If you're getting started cooking whole foods. This is a must-have cookbook. How do I cook Amaranth? Millet? What do I do with it when I'm done cooking it? He tells you. Not strictly a vegan cookbook. But, almost all of the recipes have vegan variations.

I love The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone. Sensible, easy, recipes and helpful techniques. Many of the recipes are good starting points for making your own meal with things you have on-hand. And. OK. The brownies ROCK!

I'm interested in getting the BabyCakes cookbook by Erin McKenna. Or, at least, my daughter is interested in me getting it since she doesn't have to lose an ounce of weight! Anyone used this cookbook?

Heard really good things about the Baby Cakes book, I love their bakery in NYC, it's amazing! I read their cookbook in the bookstore since it seemed pricey to me, and it was really nicely done!

The Cancer Survivor's Guide has really great recipes too!

I love to cook and have a cupboard full of cookbooks. I really do not have ones that are specific to eating vegetarian or vegan. (With the exception of Healthy Living for Life - For Children. Have gotten some great recipes from here and it is a great read!)
I have been a vegetarian for years and find that I can take many old favorite recipes and make them without the meat. Try tofu in Kung Pao, creole with black eyed peas or use Ives Veggie Ground Round instead of beef in casseroles. It just takes some practice and a little sense of adventure!

I'd like to add:

Vegetarian Meat & Potatoes (great for a family)

Marilu Henner's books (all have great recipes)!

I'll second 1000 Vegan Recipes by Robin Robertson. That will really blow you away if you think eating vegan has to be limited! Her previous one called Vegan Planet is also a must-have. Both are huge, and will keep you busy for a while. She has a 30-minutes or less book called Quick Fix Vegetarian (it's all vegan).

My daily eating style has changed a lot--way simpler, fewer recipes, just going with whatever fresh vegetables I have, adding beans or tofu, and maybe a simple sauce over whole grains. There are so many ways to vary that I rarely get bored, but I do still like making special meals for friends or holidays, etc.

Vegan Brunch is fun, by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romano. Their Veganomicon too.

Except for the cheese and egg sections, there's a whole lot of vegan (or easily veganizable) stuff in Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian also.

Madha Jaffre's World Vegetarian ditto.

Have fun...

I love "The Urban Vegan" by Dynise Balcavage. She has a great list of substitutions at the beginning of the book which I've used to make my favorite cornbread vegan - rice milk and applesauce instead of milk and egg. I can't tell the difference. Her Curry Cashew Casserole is amazing!

I also like "The Kind Diet".

Mark Bittman's "Kitchen Express" has several recipes that are either vegan or can be made vegan. His mixed bean soup on page 120 is SO tasty. We double the recipe and have it with our vegan cornbread. What a yummy meal!

Also, "The 100 Best Vegan Baking Recipes" by Kris Holechek is great.

One of my favorite vegetarian cookbook is "Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker" by Robin Robertson. Not just vegan, just about every recipe has vegan options where appropriate (Robin herself is vegan). I use this book all the time; I love the chili recipe (the one with the cornbread topper, though I've never made the cornbread). Part of what I like is that it isn't just a set and forget kind of book; you normally have to do some sort of cooking of fresh aromatics before crocking...and it makes a huge difference in flavor.

I also love books by Dreena Burton, Bryanna Clark Grogan, Christina Pirello, and other ones by Robin Robertson.

Love cookbooks...can't get enough!

I've got Veganomicon and have used that quite a bit. I also have quite a few vegetarian cookbooks. I don't like those very much because the recipes are disappointing when I read cheese or eggs in the ingredient lists.

I have The Complete Vegan Cookbook and the Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen from an older attempt at veganism. I don't think I ever used them.

I use recipes in Dr. Barnard's books and enjoy finding recipes on-line.

Don't have it in front of me but think the author and title are correct....Vegan Express by Nava Atlas! My absolute favorite if you are looking for relatively healthy (many vegan cookbooks are "full" of white flour and sugar), things that you eat everyday. For example, she has a whole page on easy tofu suggestions to feed hungry teenagers. Smile
