Green Smoothies
Posted Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 4:31 PM
Hi, everyone - This is the 4th time I have been part of the Kickstart program. I have been 90-95 vegan since January, 2010. Lost about 14 pounds almost immediately, and have maintained that since (my tummy needs to lose about 6 more!). I love the recipes and reading what all of you have to say. My fave snack or even meal sometimes is a green smoothie. I use either almond milk or soy, or sometimes OJ or lemonade if kids are having it with me. Any combo of frozen and fresh fruit I have - strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mango, raspberries - always a banana (sometimes I freeze the over-ripe ones, peeled first). Then on top I add a handful or two of spinach or baby lettuces or just strip the green from a few stalks of kale and let the VitaMix go to town. If I am having this for a meal, I add a few tablespoons of Trader Joe's organic hemp protein powder. This is so good and has endless variations, so it's never boring.

I've been having green smoothies for breakfast - usually Kale (2 large leaves minus stem), Banana (just figure out how to peal frozen bananas), 1/2 cup 100% organic apple juice, few walnuts, sometimes a strawberry or two, and enough water to make it the right consistency. Easy, quick & tasty.

I recently have become obsessed with having green smoothies for breakfast since my parents let me borrow their Vita-Mix blender. My favorite one I have made so far is one I made this morning. It had spinach, kale, strawberries, half of a banana, and 3/4c liquid (half orange juice, half soy milk). Mmmm, so good. I have been trying to make one that my husband would enjoy, and this one has to be the ticket.

I wish I could get past the 'green' in the green smoothies. I know that everyone says that you just taste the fruit (banana, berries, etc) but I can't help but think it would be like drinking the overboiled canned spinach of the Popeye era. --Deb R

I do a great Breakfast drink / smoothie also I bought a Ninja Blender (3 blades) and it works very well. I prep all my fruit/veggies in individual bags once a week, so in the morning, it is fast. I include: Fresh Spinach that have been frozen 2 cups of cold Green tea (instead of soy milk) Blueberries Cranberries 1/2 banana 3 pieces of frozen apples 4 frozen mini carrots Juice of 1/2 lemon Fresh Ginger 10 almonds for protein Makes an amazing drink, lots of fiber and high energy nutrients.
