Reactive Body?
Posted Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 12:54 AM

I am not making a radical transition as I move to the vegan diet. I've been halfway there for a long while, but I'm eating more raw veggies to be sure, I am taking proper supplements, and expectedly my gut has a running commentary.

Because I'm visiting the bathroom more often, which I know is good for the gut, I'm not having diarrhea, yet I sort of have that wasted diarrhea feeling. My energy feels kind of down.

So, it's easy to go to the place > "I'm not getting the right nutrients". I'd be grateful for comments.
Thanks.

Get MORE water in if you're losing it. Make a smoothie with banana, orange juice and just a pinch of salt to replace electrolytes if you feel kind of like you've got a diarrhea feeling. Add some fruit into there as well and maybe back off slightly on the beans and such until you reach a more comfortable level and then work your way back up to the recommended fiber level.

Sometimes people need to take an extra B-complex. I think that gives me LOTS of energy.
The other things that give me lots of energy is exercise, sleep and eating enough.

Thank you very much for your helpful tips. I believe that I'm eating enough fruit, but I do have a question regarding salt.

I'm lucky that in latter middle age that I have low bad cholesterol and high good cholesterol readings, and lowish blood pressure. I have to thank my genetics plus the fact that a good diet is a contributor.

I'm balking at certain products though, that seem to bring high salt levels to a vegan diet. Products such as Shoyu, umeboshi plums, and miso are, I'm sure, healthful products but they really load on the salt.

I'm being conservative with these products.
Thoughts?

Again, my appreciation!

Aim to keep the daily sodium level below 1000 mg - whether that means having a little bit several times per day or having low sodium most of day because you'll be having a little shoyu in your stir fry for dinner. Blood pressure is not solely sodium though - aside from genetics, you also need to account for water and potassium (in particular). A 2-1 or 3-1 ratio of potassium to sodium is suggested for a healthy cardiovascular system. There are lots of sources of potassium included in the kickstart (lots of fruits and veggies with lots of potassium).

You are more than likely fine, absorbing what you need. A lot of movement is a good thing, unless of course you are "dropping" food in your gut, meaning, going from mouth to toilet in well under an hour.

Deb and Susan,

Thank you for your information and tips.

I'll take them under advisement.

The best to you.
