I gained weight after 3 days of going VEGAN!
Posted Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 9:19 AM

I weighed myself before starting the Vegan way of eating. I wanted to see if there was a difference after 3 days, so I weighed myself this morning. I GAINED 4lbs!! I don't know what happened. Maybe I ate too many servings of fruits/veggies/beans/grains. Shocked Confused

I'm going to be interested to see what some of our moderators say. Unless you're eating something that is making you hold water, it's hard to believe you've gained actual weight.

Hi there,

It's hard to say what might be going on with your body/system, but I encourage my clients to only weigh themselves once a week (at most!) and do it at a time in the day that is consistent, the morning can be a good time.

It's easy for people to get overly focused on the weight loss and the numbers on the scale. For the next three weeks, consider that the only thing to worry about is eating the healthiest vegan diet possible. So, maybe you don't weigh yourself until March 22? By doing this you could really focus on your diet, how the food makes you feel and how you are feeling in your body rather than what a scale is telling you. I think you will find some great results.

What do you think?

Hang in there, because if you are refining your plate to focus on fruits, vegetables, beans and grains, limiting the fat and processed foods, you will see and feel a difference. Give yourself the space and time to settle in and enjoy the process.

We are here for you!

Malinda,

There is an entire thread from the January 21 Day that you will find very helpful. Here is an excerpt from something I shared there:

Quote:

This happened to me as well. Actually, I gained 2 lbs in the first month. And this was after decades of vegetarian diet! So the changes for me were dairy, free fats, higher fat foods.

They came on pretty quick, stuck around for that month, and then in the month after I dropped them, then the next month 2 more...

Our bodies need adjust time. We always dread the idea of weight coming on fast but want it to go OFF fast, aren't we something?

If your changes include a step up in dietary fiber (usually does, did for me) then you have more fibrous content in the digestive track which - holds water. Translates to poundage, but not bodyfat poundage. So you may be losing fat yet holding a bit of water in the system.

Carbohydrate binds more water in our system than protein, so if your macronutrient content has shifted, this can explain water weight as well. I look at it as getting hydrated, especially for those coming off a dietary plan that is too steep in protein, which purges water from the system. You may be re-hydrating.

I hope you find this encouraging! Give it time, take care and have compassion for your body, and keep getting support for positive changes!

How did you eat before doing this vegan challenge?

I know Ive tried low carb, counting carb grams and sugar grams per day, lost weight, BUT as soon as you add back in your fruits, it all comes back.

Not worth counting low carb foods to be thin, didnt feel well either. I was wanting the foods I am eating now, but couldnt have doing lower carb.

Hang in there, it will come off. Your body is thanking you for eating what it needs.

yes happened to me too. keep cool Cool

After that (for me it was around 2 weeks) I started to loose weight from all the bits I never loose it from (thighs, upper arms, chin) rather than where I usually do (boobs and belly).. I am still at it and DESPITE my regularly (like twice a week) being a bad girl and eating something vegan but sugary or fatty I am still slowly shedding - now also from the boobs, butt and belly areas.

BTW I never weigh myself, but watch my clothes getting bigger instead...

Not sure if this has any application but I gained a couple of pounds to start with then dropped back the same, then hovered for several months at about the same place. I then figured out I was eating lots of nuts and 1-2 avacado's / day. I was stuffing myself with fat and didn't realize it.

I stopped eating the truckloads of nuts and stopped the avocado's and stopped using oil and have lost almost 10 lbs in last 2 months (40 more to go) and quite frankly I eat like a pig. I am feeding a very active and fit 17 year old who thinks he has to eat 5 times a day, and I like to eat with him.

It is pretty easy to get too much fat eating Vegan and that is not healthy.

No worries, that's happening with me too, but I feel great.
