WEIGH INS

I saw last time people were doing weekly weigh-ins. Is anybody up for that this time. I am fighting with my last 10 or so lbs and posting maybe would make me accountable!!! Figure height and weight weekly would be a good incentive!!! I would start posting on Monday. What do ya think?

I will try, also. I am trying to lose 5-7 lbs that I picked up this summer (though I'm not sure why I suddenly gained weight). I am 5'4, 127 lbs. and 52 yr. old female.

Hey Kathy - I think that's a GREAT idea hoping my next kickstart I will be struggling with my last ten pounds but sadly I will start this kickstart struggling with about 40 lbs However I am determined that I will be successful and hope to be at my desired weight by the new year and would love to have support via other vegans who also struggle with their weight. I have noticed that I am more successful and able to stay on track when I am held accountable.....

I started the kickstarts underweight, but am living proof of the fat vegan! lol I've gained a little fluff, and would like to lose a few pounds, but mostly just eat healthier and be kind to my body. 5'4" 119 lb. (on a very small frame!) Would like to be a steady 113-115.

Those last 5 - 10 lbs can be a real bear. It becomes about less -for want of a better word - 'cheats' (even the little ones now seem to have more impact. And other things you might not suspect: Switching out frequent bread for whole cooked grains, and really investigating calorie density. And of course we also have to ascertain whether we really need to lose the few lbs and what the trade-offs might be. At the same time, being aware of the scale research shows is a motivator for those successful at weight loss and management. It's not for everyone, yet can be more helpful than not. Here's a report on the study: Does Checking the Scale Help With Weight Management? There are other 'measures' you can take into the mix that can also be helpful tools, rather than just relying on one: How to accurately find your waist to hip ratio + BMI (video) All in all, you are right on about accountability, it has a definite effect. Oh I definitely know what my "extra" weight is from. more bready items, simple carb/sugars!!! I definitely have a sugar addiction which I can break but somehow it comes back to haunt me and I fall for its seduction!!! For some reason over the past year I have gotten into more of the simple carb/sugary stuff more than ever... So I'm hoping to break this one more time and get back to where I'm comfortable before it takes off on its own.. I haven't been on the scale in a couple weeks. I just hate the number. I am trying to go by the "feel" of my clothes and my measurements, which I believe is much more accurate especially with all the hormonal/perimenopausal changes going on.. So I will officially step on the scale on Monday, but for now, I'm 5'8" about 160ish and 46 years old!!

And I topped out at 189.5 years ago (yes, '.5') so I know the struggles. Words of advice: get the tempters and offenders OUT of the house. Even if you have to throw it away.
be sure you are eating to satiety with high fiber, low fat whole from early in the day. It's a powerful strategy to offset 'cravings' which may just be hunger! Did you see my Carbophobia blog?

More than weight (61, 5'3, 143 lbs) am concerned with maintaining high level of muscle to fat ratio and losing the fat in my midsection which seems to be terribly stubborn. Giving up cheese, EVO and yoghurt will probably be hardest for me I will be trying week one on a dive boat and will be travelling. But that is what I do so waiting until I don't travel isn't a good option. Here's wishing everyone success with the next three weeks.

I generally use the scale for the trend, not the value. I only 'count' what the doctor's scale says at my quarterly follow ups. But, I use the household scale to find trends - am I trending higher numbers, lower numbers, staying about the same? That helps me fine tune what I'm doing "hmm trending up this week - what's different? oh yeah, been grabbing handfuls of peanuts to snack on...gotta watch that" or "trending down this week, what have I been doing better? I've been having a tossed green salad at lunch every day, that seems to be helping." that sort of stuff. --Deb R

Just confirming a healthy serving for legumes and grains a day is 1cup - correct? Would this be an appropriate amount daily in order to bring down the weight? Or would it be suggested that I do 1/2C daily? Any other suggestions on what you've done? I've eaten a vegan diet for for about a year now with a few dairy slips.....the weight just doesn't seem to come off...and I am only 35......and a busy busy mom......

[quote="peacefirevegan"]Just confirming a healthy serving for legumes and grains a day is 1cup - correct? Would this be an appropriate amount daily in order to bring down the weight? Or would it be suggested that I do 1/2C daily? quote] What makes you feel good and satisfied? Bottom line is that calories in must be lower than calories out to lose weight. How one goes about that is where things vary. If eating 1/2 c of legumes and grains per day keeps you feeling full, satisfied, and energetic, great. If not, adjust. How you adjust is up to you - more legumes and grains; different legumes and grains; less grains more legumes; same legumes and grains more fruits and veggies; etc. What is best for your body and for my body are different. What's best for my growing 13 yr old boy and my 43 yr old hubby are different from me and from each other. --Deb R

Thanks for starting this thread, Kathy. I appreciate everyone's comments! I'm 50, and was 13 when I first went veg, though I've had on and off times (mostly veg, but with some exceptions). Now, after one false start, I've been consistently vegan for just under two years, thanks to Jonathan Safran Foer and Food, Inc. As it happens, everyone in my family, veg or not (for different reasons -- animals, environment, health), are nice, round, Jewish food addicts. We all love sweets and fat things and nut butters and we bake and cook and have family parties at which everyone eats thirds and fourths. And that's when we don't just start eating when we arrive and keep it up for eight or ten hours. No off switch, really. Actually, when I think about it, even though I eat mostly whole foods (lots of whole foods, plus treats) it's not at all surprising that I weigh about 155 (at 5'4"). My doctor would like me to lose 15 pounds. I can't get all the treats out of the house either. My spouse is 6 feet tall, 127 pounds, and struggles to keep his weight up (he's vegan too, doesn't care for sweets, gets tired of always snacking on extra nuts, and doesn't have as big an appetite as I do...) So that's my challenge. A lucky kind of challenge to have, really, to have enough and more than enough to eat. Very grateful for that. Sarah

Sarah Makes it a lot easier to keep kosher at home when there's no meat OR dairy OR shellfish and such to deal with...we're not Jewish but my dad's family is so we're somewhat conversant with food stuff. And, yeah, I could a plate of rugalach (sp?) as a meal any day of the week. My dad's aunt made the best kugel ever - I've been trying for years to find ANYONE who makes it even close to her recipe. Makes it a little easier to turn it down since I know it won't match up That cultural thing of "if there's company, there must be cake!" thing rubbed off - we were having someone over (not even a close friend or family member) to discuss a business situation one evening. After we cleared up dinner, I quick made a batch of vegan brownies to put on the table and got the kettle ready to make tea. Some things just don't change. We just try to make the best choices in the situation that we can. --Deb R

Sis11: I totally have the same hubby problem. My husband is 5'8-1/2 and maybe 135 lbs. At least your husband is vegan.. Mine's not vegan and he's always looking for "something" (junk). He can wipe out a package of Oreos in 2 days. I don't bring that stuff in the house, he has to get his stuff on his own. At least I don't like oreos!!! That helps. But I did grow up with sweets. My mom always had something on the counter and our freezer was loaded!!! Just in case someone stopped by for coffee!! God forbid you didn't have something sweet to offer. So that sweets are the hardest to get a handle on. I have been making vegan cookies, hardly any fat and whole ingredients, but it is so hard to have just one or two!! maybe one day. Funny thing I made vegan chocolate crinkles from the vegan cookies invade your cookie jar (I think that's what it's called) cookbook and my husband loved them. It's his favorite cookie. So maybe there is hope getting him off simple garbage and at least eating "sweets" with at least a little better ingredients... Sugar is still sugar!! So I need to focus more on the complex carbs like Lani said earlier and in her blog. I think I've been one of those afraid of "carbs" period. I can really load up on vegies, having no problem with that and I LOVE lentils, but maybe I need to get more complex carbs in my early day as Lani suggested. I do eat steel cuts for breakfast, but maybe it's time to work on other complex carbs for breakfast. Lots of times I do eat leftovers for breakfats but they are usually lentils and vegies, not really carbs. So maybe that's what I'm missing... and that's why I stray into the simple stuff... Gotta really take a look at what I'm eating and make note of it!!! Anyway, thanks for all the good advice out there. I'm so glad I finally got on this forum. I don't really have any vegan support around here to talk to. I rely mostly on books. I think this is going to be a GREAT kickstart this time!!!

Thanks for these great posts, Deb and Kathy! Though my family's not kosher but sort of California mongrel (and several family members follow a variety of religious traditions), we love rugelach (?), and had just better not find a vegan version. And that's a really good point about hospitality equaling sweets, Deb. Basically almost all of my friends are omnivores, so I want to give them food they'll like when they come over. Kathy, the oreos story is funny (I don't like them either -- it was one of the things that my former spouse, an avid meat eater, could keep around the house very safely. And, no, the marriage didn't end over meat...) That's a good point about carbs, too. I have a ton of veg cookbooks and need to focus on altering the recipes or concentrating on those like Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Appetite for Reduction (instead of her cookies or cupcake or -- upcoming -- pies and cobblers). I'm happy to be in this conversation and to have a chance to check in with people who are wrestling with weight and figuring out how to eat a whole foods, very low fat, plant-based diet. We just saw the fabulous Forks Over Knives documentary and are feeling really motivated to do something about the fat in our diet...

sis11 wrote: , we love rugelach (?), and had just better not find a vegan version. If you use vegan margarine or non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening, rugelach would be pretty simple to recreate - it's basically a flaky pastry around some sort of filling (fruit, chocolate, cinnamon sugar, nuts, etc). That's one of the pitfalls - many baked treats are really simple to recreate as vegan by subbing plant milk for dairy, flaxseed or banana (or other things) for egg, non-hydrogenated shortening for hydrogenated shortening (or -shudder- lard). Recreating meatloaf or chicken parmesan is much harder to get the taste and texture right than it is to make a vegan apple pie (since apple pie is basically vegan to start with unless you dab butter inside, and margarine works fine for that). --Deb R

I am totally up for this! I am doing the kickstart for the 3rd time. Stayed mostly vegan from Jan. thru July for my son's vegan wedding. I lost about 15lbs. for that but have now gained back about 5 lbs. and haven't been vegan (started eating junk, sugar and cheese!) since middle of July. Want to feel better and try to lose 50lbs. by the first of the year if possible. I am also going to do measurements because it is discouraging when the scale doesn't move! So count me in!!

My husband and I are doing this 21day kickstart, it is our first. He wants to lose 50 lbs and i need to lose about 65 lbs. We know it won't happen over night, nor during this first 3 weeks - but hope this gets us on a better track for overall health and weight control. He is 72 and I'm 56 - if anyone has age specific information or encouragement - we would sure love to hear it! Thanks and happy health to everyone!

I tried this last kickstart and didnt do so well. But here I go again. 5ft 4 inches and currently 166 lb. Better than the 170 that I was but I dont need to tell you all I have still have some major weight to loose. I would like to get back to around 126 - 128 lbs which is confortable for me. I still have clothes in my closet that I want to wear again when I get back to the weight I was, including my favourite jeans I couldnt bear to part with. So clothes is my main motivation (aside from health) not the scales. When I get into my jeans again I will be soooo happy.
