Controversy re: Unfermented Soy (Tofu)

What is the PCRM's position on the purported dangers of unfermented soy, such as in this article by Dr. Mercola -- http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/09/18/soy-can-damage-your-health.aspx

I've been aware of these claims, even from vegans who limit or abstain from eating tofu. I happen to love tofu, but would like to get to the truth about it. I don't particulary like tempeh, and natto seems like quite an adventure (maybe not in a good way)

What is PCRM's position on this?

In general, populations that consume soy in a close to unaltered state (tofu, tempeh, soymilk, miso, edamame) do not show an increased risk for diseases; in fact, they show a decreased risk for chronic diseases.

As far as information on Mercola's site, I've never found it to be very well referenced, if referencing science at all. He has a lot of opinions but not a lot of evidence.

That being said, soy is but one bean of many. If you don't want to eat soy, you won't lose out on anything that you can't get from other legumes.

I'm still a little unclear about whether TOFU (organic, non-gmo of course) is good or bad ... where the purported problem is that it is unfermented. Since I eat quite a bit of it (and it will take a while for me to familiarize and transition to the fermented soys)I would like to know if you give an ok to TOFU.

Your link does say "Simple soy products, such as tempeh, edamame, or soynuts, are probably best choices." No mention of tofu. So does the PCRM basically concur with Mercola on TOFU?

No. PCRM does not agree with Mercola. There is no evidence that tofu is unsafe. Quite the contrary.

I know this is a bit off topic, but Mercola has been investigated by FDA for illegal claims, and is featured on Quackwatch.

I know I am not a dietitian or health professional, and do not purport to be, but I have read a lot about nutrition, health and the like. From everything I've read, tofu and other soy products (excepting isolated soy proteins and the more "bastardized" forms of soy) are very safe and healthy, and as Susan said, can lower the risk of many diseases. Mercola is, in my opinion, not a good source of information and not to be trusted. I prefer to trust PCRM, and the many other reliable sources who use proven science to back up their health claims.

Totally my opinion, though. Wink

I tend to look for non-GMO soy products, also. The closer a food is to the way Nature intended it to be, the better ...
