What food is the most difficult to give up?
Posted Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 8:27 AM
I had no problem giving up meat 8 years ago, but CHEESE, wow that one was hard. Cheese was my protein snack to go to. So I found vegan alternatives. I also did some EFT (emotional freedom technique) to remove cheese cravings and stress around feeling deprived of a food I love. So what is the most difficult for you to give up? Brigitte

During the first kickstart, my once a day non-fat Greek yogurt was the hardest thing to stop (and I didn't). Currently, the hardest thing is to get added oils out in cooking (like sauteeing in water or doing a stir fry with water). We don't use a lot and it's not every day but it's still there - and hubby (the head chef in the house) isn't sure how far he's willing to go in that regard. So, this kickstart we'll be experimenting in that direction. --Deb R

What made it easy for me (though I wasn't an everyday multi cup drinker) was when I recognized that it was contributing to serious, random, blood sugar spikes. I just did NOT need the coffee at the expense of my glucose control (and potentially more medication to control it). --Deb R

I really missed the creaminess of the cheese/sour cream mix on tex-mex (chili, burritos, etc). That's where the not-cheese sauce is helpful - it adds the creamy texture back again. And, a small amount of mashed or sliced avocado is also helpful. Yes, it does add fat but far better than the dairy. --Deb R

Definitely cheese. (I'm not giving up my coffee! but I drink it black now) Truly the hardest part is changing habits for me. I mean, I like to "graze" mindlessly and that HAS to stop. Yes, I can snack on vegan food but it just sets me up for an all-out binge and that's no good, whether I'm omni/veg or vegan. Edit: How could I forget wine/beer? LOL. That's a very close second to the cheese. Although I will still allow some every once in a while, the nightly glass of wine/beer will have to stop if I ever want to take off the weight.

For me cheese wasn't hard to give up, which actually was a big surprise. I never much liked yogurt or other dairy, so that was easy too. But eliminating added oils has been hard. I am so used to cooking with a little olive oil. Cooking oil-free has been quite an adjustment. I gave up pop a while ago. That wasn't too hard. But coffee... oh sweet coffee. I am down to less than 1 cup per day but I love my 1 cup. Also, I have been slowly eliminating processed foods. I am trying hard to not rely on processed meat substitutes (boca burgers and the like). I haven't been able to completely go unprocessed, but slowly I am making better choices.

breads and baked good (sweets). I realize that I can have rye and pumpernickel and Ezekial type breads but that is not what I'm talking about. I also find that if I have the GOOD breads I tend to overeat them. The sweets I am getting better at controlling if they are here. I do like to bake some treats for my kids now and then.

If you're still nursing, you probably need more fat than the kickstart would normally include. Enjoy the nuts and maybe some avocado for now at least. --Deb R

Coffee, I cut back to two cups a day, and I'm not giving those up. I did when I was pregnant, so it's not that I can't just that I won't Seafood is the hardest for me to give up. I never did cook it, but I love to order it when we go out.
