Vegan Arthritis Suffers
Posted Friday, March 5, 2010 at 10:57 AM
I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both my knees 16 years ago (gave up running switched to bicycling) I have used a glucosaime/chondroitin supplement every since with great results. Sadly this is not a vegan product, (cartliage, shellfish, gelatin). I would love to hear from Vegan arthritis suffers, what do you use? I can't use prescription drugs, my stomache doesn't tolerate them. Thanks!

Wow, coincidence. I was just reading about this yesterday (my mom has arthritis too). Deva makes a vegan glucosamine: http://www.devanutrition.com/healthnotes.html There are 2 different products, at the top of this page: http://www.devanutrition.com/vitamins.html

Can't help with the glucosamine-never worked for me. I was on antiinflams, muscle relexants & pain pills to help with my osteoarthritis (neck, back, hip & knees). I also had to give up running. Two years ago, I read Dr Barnard's book, Foods That Fight Pain & was ready to try anything. I did the 10 day Master Cleanse to detox, then started the elimination diet suggested in the book. I found I was ok with tomatoes, citrus & nuts, but gluten, white potatoes, meats & dairy were my triggers. I have been on a gluten free, vegan diet ever since. Within 4 months, I was off all my daily meds, rarely take an antiinflammatory & when I do, it is when I have done a long hike or pushed too hard exercising. I am back running again this year with no flares. I will NEVER go back to my old diet. Eating vegan has given me my active life back without drugs!!

Bons, Thanks so much for your encouragement and great information. I'm going to get Dr. Barnard's book you mentioned. Don't have that one. I too have Osteoarthritis and Lupus. I'm trying to keep most of the wheat/gluten out of my diet, but need to get more diligent about it. I've noticed it makes me so "bloated". My goal is to taper down and wean off the Plaquenil. Have been on it for almost a year. I'm fighting my doctor on going on anything stronger, he's been mentioning that he would like to put me on something stronger. I'm not giving in and am bound and determined to show him that diet can make a difference. I bought a new cookbook called "The Gluten-Free Vegan" by Susan O'Brien Cookbook and one called "A Cook's Bible Gluten-Free, Wheat Free, & Dairy-Free Recipes. I'm sure you're aware too, there are some good wheat/gluten free products and there are some that are just not worth eating. Would appreciate any other input you have regarding Gluten-Free Vegan recipes etc. I'm encouraged after reading your post.........thanks so much again for sharing your testimony with us

I know what you mean about the gluten-free products. I threw quite a few breads away trying to find something I like. Never really have, so I tend to use rice wraps instead. A new pizza place opened by me last week & I was SO HAPPY! Had my first pizza in 2 years-gluten free with dairy free cheese and veggie topping. Even by husband (non-vegan) thought it was good. I have the gluten free vegan cookbook & have been happy with the recipes. I just purchased Babycakes, but have not had a chance to try anything yet. Lots of gluten, dairy free cupcakes & dessert recipes. Hope to try something this weekend. Please give the diet a chance to work before changing meds. Also, the elimination diet in Dr Barnard's book might show you other things you might be sensitive to. My doctor was a non believer until I proved him wrong.

My doctor was a non believer until I proved him wrong. Bons, I am planning to give the diet time to work. Just started back on the Vegan plan the first week in January. The medication has kept me from some very painful and scary episodes that I was having regularly for 2 years. Was very grateful to get some relief and to be able to put a name to what was going on with me. I also worked in the Medical field for several years and have some nurse's training, so I'm aware of the dangers of just stopping meds as well. When I feel the time is right, I will carefully taper the medication slowly. I really want to make a believer out of my doctor too! He just chuckled when I said I was going back on the vegan diet to see if it would help. Then he said......"There's no proof that any diet will help Lupus".........actually I thankful he said it.....just made me more determined to prove to him otherwise. Was on the vegan plan about 9 years ago. At that time I found out I was highly allergic to wheat bran, so got off the wheat pretty much too. All my joint pain went away and I was sleeping without medication for the first time in a long time. So, I know it works. The exercise is the next thing I need to address. I did a lot of walking last time and it really helped too. I looked for Dr. Barnard's book today at the bookstore and they were out and said the manufacturer was also waiting for a shipment. Going to check online. I'm really interested in the "detox" and "elimination" diet you talked about. Appreciate you support and input.........thanks!

I did not recommend just stopping your meds, just suggested you give the diet a chance to work before trying any stronger meds. That was what prompted me to begin my search for alternative therapies. When my doc suggested steroids, I knew I had to find some other way! Especially since you know the diet helped before, give it a chance & when your symptoms improve, then work with your doc to taper or d/c the meds if possible. Have you checked Amazon? Usually can get used books through them. I have done that before & can usually get a very good price too. In the meantime, check out PCRM.ORG & search nutrition & arthritis. The safe & trigger foods are listed. Basically for the elimination, you eat only the safe foods for a week or so, & then add 1 of the trigger foods in for 2 days & see if there is a reaction. If not, it is probably ok for you. If there is, I stopped it & tried it again a week later to confirm. Pros & cons on detoxing. I have done the Master Cleanse once a year for the last 3 years. Will be doing my annual next month. It is hard for a lot of people, but it is easier now that I am eating cleaner, less toxins to remove. I feel great after the first couple days & it gave me a clean slate to begin the elimination diet. Depending on your meds, you might not be able to do it if you need foods to protect your stomach-especially anti-inflamatories. Just eating clean from the safe foods list for a week should be a good start before the elimination I would think. As for the exercise-keeping moving is always good. Just listen to your body on what it can tolerate-don't overdo. It has taken me almost 2 years to feel able to start running again & believe me it is a slow process but I am getting there! Good luck!!

You may be able to get Foods that Fight Pain from the PCRM store. Jean
