Removing Toxins
Posted Friday, March 5, 2010 at 11:34 AM

I've heard that when a person first goes vegan she might have signs that toxins are being removed from her system: diarrhea; headaches; pimples, etc. I went vegan on January 1st with the 21 Day Kickstart, so I've been vegan for over 2 months and I haven't "cheated" once. However, my skin is still VERY pimply and I continue to get the bad cystic zits. Is it normal for the toxin removal to last as long as this? I'm feeling great in every other way - I've lost 8 pounds, am having much less sinus trouble, but I'm still getting the bad zits. Does anyone have any idea about this?

I have heard Marilu Henner say that depending on how much you ate of dairy and meat it can take awhile. Dairy is reallllly bad stuff so it can linger and take awhile. Hang in there. Cool

Umm.. how many days does it take for these symptoms to come on? :/ I've only been doing this for the last week... but I don't want those side effects. Surprised

I'm glad you brought this up. I just started the kickstart in March, however, but I'm having the acne problem also. I've never had very clear skin to begin with but I had it under control and now they seem to be popping up all along my hairline. I'm also having the digestion issues! It has gotten better but the first few days were not pleasant. I'm just hoping that it is all part of the process and that eventually everything will clear up

Thank you, Aleta. Before going vegan I was eating dairy for 49 years, so I guess it could take more than two months to remove all of that garbage from my system.

When I told my mom that I was dropping dairy and eggs from my diet (I'd already dropped meat the year before) she told me that when I was an infant I couldn't tolerate dairy and soy, so my parents had a horrible time finding something I could eat. Of course it makes sense that I become a vegan and that I feel so much better not putting all of that poison into my system.

Hi there,

People going on a vegan diet have different experiences, some people report an extreme boost in energy and light feeling to their body and spirit and a few people report this detox feeling if you will and headaches, etc. Some people decide to quit coffee, smoking and drinking when going vegan and feel some reactions, which would be normal. Coffee is technically vegan, but that's besides the point.

Onto Acne, there is some evidence that dairy is linked to acne and if you private message me your email address I can send you the article we published on that topic.

But, we just finished running a study on diet and acne and our results are not in and not conclusive. People switching to a vegan diet did not necessarily see a change in their acne or cystic acne, but some of them did. And, some of them needed to be on the diet for more than 4 months to see a change. And, further, one person contacted us about how added sodium was what was causing her severe acne, so we tested that too, similar inconclusive results.

So, the verdict is still out on what links there are between diet and acne.

Hope this helps in some way,

Jill Eckart
