If they aren't what do you recommend? fitzie Yes, Crisco is vegan (vegetable oil based) however it is hydrogenated fat and that's what you want to avoid. Not to mention that it is fat in general that you want to minimize. Spectrum brand (and probably others) make a non-hydrogenated vegetable oil "shortening" that works great (but we keep it in the fridge in the summer or it gets a bit melty). Just read the label - does it contain any dairy (including milk, cream, whey, casein, etc)? does it say "partially hydrogenated" or "hydrogenated"? And then, consider how much you are using - keep in mind that the kickstart is aiming for a daily total of approximately 20ish grams of fat (10% of calories). --Deb R
