Is Crisco vegan?
What about Bestlife Buttery Spread?
If they aren't what do you recommend?

Yes, Crisco is vegan (vegetable oil based) however it is hydrogenated fat and that's what you want to avoid. Not to mention that it is fat in general that you want to minimize. Spectrum brand (and probably others) make a non-hydrogenated vegetable oil "shortening" that works great (but we keep it in the fridge in the summer or it gets a bit melty).

Just read the label - does it contain any dairy (including milk, cream, whey, casein, etc)? does it say "partially hydrogenated" or "hydrogenated"?

And then, consider how much you are using - keep in mind that the kickstart is aiming for a daily total of approximately 20ish grams of fat (10% of calories).

For margarine, we use Earth Balance. We buy ours at Walmart (of all places lol) and it's about $1.50 cheaper there than the local natural foods store.

We try not to eat hydrogenated oils, so we don't buy Crisco, though I guess it is vegan since it's just vegetable oil, right? Confused

I found Earth Balance brand shortening at our local chain grocery store, but I haven't used it yet. Shortening is actually something I seldom use. I just bought it in an impulse. It says 0 trans fat per tbsp, which would not necessarily be the case for a whole cup! Ingredients are palm fruit, soybean, canola and olive oils.

Of course, you wouldn't likely be eating a whole cup at any one time either - even if a recipe for, say, pie crust, called for a cup of shortening, you'd be eating maybe 1/8 of that (1 slice). There are some things that get just a nicer texture from shortening (like biscuits), so we keep shortening on hand - but it lasts a lot longer now than it used to!
