problems with agave ?
Posted Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 1:03 PM

I've been vegan since late Dec./10 & LOVE this diet. Unfortunately, I've lost 10 lbs. which I can't afford to lose. {6 ft. & at 147} But my question is why is there controversy over using agave as a low GI sweetener ? I especially like blue agave. By the way, I gave up wine-drinking on my vegan diet & don't even miss it. Ditto for meat, cheese , eggs etc . Thanks for your replies.

Agave is a sugar. It's low-er glycemically than table sugar but it's still sugar. I think some of the issue is related to the sucrose/fructose situation - there are some things floating about the web that fructose is worse than sucrose. As with anything, lots of fact checking is needed to make sure that "they say" is based on valid research.

And, too, it depends on what you're talking about - there are a lot of very processed agave products on the market since the 'wave' of popularity hit. And there are also raw agave products available as well.

Any time you start talking about any kind of sugar, you'll hear about controversy. I use mostly agave, but you do need to purchase organic agave. What's happening is that, with agave's popularity, more companies are trying to get more product on the shelves. And in some cases, instead of the traditional processing method, they're using chemicals and even adding high-fructose corn syrup.

As with most things, in moderation I think it's fine. But I'm sure someone will disagree with me. Smile
