Chemo question
Posted Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 2:31 PM

Mom got through the night after her first chemo treatment without getting sick!!! HOORAY!!

Someone suggested that perhaps it was due to her eating low fat, high fiber, vegan for 3 weeks prior to start, that it detoxified her. Anyone hear of this?

Chemo in itself is a toxin. So I don't know. Just keeping focused on her food and rest times. I am learning to provide home health nursing/management/etc for her.

I cannot tell you how relieved I am to have this nutritional information and this forum with friends as my back up!

I've never heard of it but I do know that some cancer treatment places do have nutritionists that work with the chemo patients to minimize the effects by boosting their systems.

Glad that it went well

I am so, so happy to hear this. My heart and thoughts are with you and your mom during this tough time.

I don't know much about chemo, but I think your hunch is correct. The diet could be playing a role in cleaning out the toxins from her body. Brings to mind how important this diet is for my own health. Thank you for that reminder.

Indeed, this forum is so crucial for emotional and mental support. What would we do without it?! Smile

I don't know if your mom's diet kept her from getting sick or not. I think it depends on the type of chemo you have, though I'm sure your diet helps a lot. My dad has a very rare, very aggressive form of cancer and gets chemo every 6 months, for 5 days in a row, and eats an all organic, plant based diet, though he does eat organic, grass fed meats sometimes, and he gets sick every time. It usually kicks in on the second night and then he's sick for the next 7-10 days, he says. He's on his 6th different type of chemo, though, and this one's really powerful, so as I said, I think it just depends on what type of chemo you have.

Also, everyone handles chemo differently. Two different people could be getting the exact same dose of the same medicine and one will be sick and the other one not.

That being said, I'm really glad your mom did so well on her first night and I hope and pray that she continues to handle it well.

So sorry to hear of your mom's need for treatment. I know from a friend's experience that an organic vegan diet is the best way to support cancer treatment, so you and she are totally on the right track.

Sending healing thoughts.

well i don't know anything about cancer & diet... but at least her body doesn't have to fight all the sad diet food and cancer.. give her a good diet and her body can concentrate on what is most pressing.

well thoughts to her and comforting thoughts to you!

To my knowledge, the Cancer Project, which is a subsidiary of PCRM, has extensive research showing that a high-fiber, low-fat vegan diet is the best approach for cancer prevention and survival. Their nutrition and cooking classes teach a way of eating similar to the 21-day Kickstart, but perhaps even more healthy – if you can imagine that! Smile

The main website is here: http://www.cancerproject.org/

Their book, The Cancer Survivor's Guide, is an excellent resource on cancer survival and care, as well as an excellent cookbook. You can purchase it online or download a pdf for free at this link: http://www.cancerproject.org/resources/guide.php

Additionally, if any of you are ever able to take their nutrition classes, I highly recommend them. They are amazingly informative, fun, educational, and the food is delicious! You'll come away with great knowledge about health, cancer prevention and survival, and a better understanding of veganism. A win all around! I can't say enough good things about them. Smile

A couple of my friends are dealing with chemo and they both start feeling sick a couple days after treatment. One of them has chemo every other week plus a clinical trial every week. Even though she feels bad at times, she manages to keep on working. Amazing what a positive attitude can do!

Good luck with your mom, I'm sure your being there is deeply appreciated.
