organic vs. reg. veggies and fruits
Posted Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 12:54 AM
I have asked other places and I am still wondering this. I try and buy organic whenever I can but sometimes it is not an option. Then sometimes organic comes all the way from Mexico or South America. What a big foot print. So I get reg veggies but wonder if they are safe or how they should be washed to clean the toxins. Would like you all to weigh in on this. Sorry for the pun. Thanks.

I dont know that I would buy organic from Mexico. I dont think they have our standards. I only buy organic. I took the time to detox, so I dont want those pesticides going back into my body. On a few things, such as tomatoes, I dont even see organic at Wholefoods, so, I just wash them REALLY good. I love summer when the tomatoes are good.

In light of the newest recall of foods containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein (a flavour enhancer) I throw up my hands in despair. I watched an interview on the news last night with an official from some food agency stating that once toxins are in the foods like salad greens, tomatoes, berries and even potatoes, it's virtually impossible to wash them all out! I did question my local Safeway store about organic foods from Mexico and was told that the foods MUST meet Safeway standards in order to be sold in their stores as organic foods... Not sure if that means much or not. I guess the best thing to do, as has been mentioned here before, is to eat in season and buy from local farmers. And pray you won't get sick from the foods you eat.

Of course, if we grow our own vegetables and learn to can them, we definitely have better control. Anything short of that is a risk. I believe if we do the best we can to make the right choices and ask the Lord to bless our food then we will be alright. From: http://www.organic.org/ Whether you are on a budget and need to prioritize your organic purchases, or you would simply like to know which type of produce has the highest pesticide residues—and which do not—the following guide from the Environmental Working Group will help. 12 Most Contaminated Peaches Apples Sweet Bell Peppers Celery Nectarines Strawberries Cherries Pears Grapes (Imported) Spinach Lettuce Potatoes 12 Least Contaminated Onions Avocado Sweet Corn (Frozen) Pineapples Mango Asparagus Sweet Peas (Frozen) Kiwi Fruit Bananas Cabbage Broccoli Papaya

Thank you for this info on the organic veggies. But is it good to get them even if they are from Mexico? That's a long way for those veggies to travel and that is a pretty big foot print.

Oddly enough, I noticed small print on the label on my organic bananas inviting me to visit the farm at http://doleorganic.com/ They listed the certifying agencies and had pdfs of the farm's organic certification - from the USDA, even though the farm is in Ecuador. (The label on the bananas also had a USDA organic logo.) I wouldn't trust anything organic from China, but feel differently about Mexico. Different groups have worked to promote sustainable, organic farming in the south of Mexico and in Central America as a way maintain the environment and to improve the lives of indigenous farmers. Of course, I can't be 100% certain that all of the produce making it here to us in the US is really grown responsibly, sustainable and according to fair trade practices but I feel I have significant reason to hope.
