Fruit & Vegetable Wash - Your Thoughts, Please
Posted Friday, January 15, 2010 at 12:38 PM

I have heard different things about the best way to wash fruits and vegetables. Can you guys give me some insight into what is considered the "best" way to handle this. Does using a fruit and vegetable wash make that much of a difference.
For our business, we do a lot of in-home cooking demonstrations. We have been using a fruit and veggie wash to "err on the side of caution", but I would like to hear what the experts (you guys) have to say.
Thanks, much.

Author Ellen Sandback shared this guest blog post, an elegant and simple solution to killing bacteria in your home, from her book, Green Housekeeping .

Disinfecting raw foods:
PRODUCE
When you are washing fruits and vegetables, rinse off the dirt and grit, then spray them with vinegar and then with hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide, which has no taste, rinses the vinegar off the produce. No further rinsing is necessary.

The above was posted on SparkPeople.com and I have been using this method. Seems to work for me. Though it says it's not necessary I do rinse well with water afterward.

You should definitely wash conventional produce and rinse organic. I make my iwn veggie wash: a small spray bottle with distilled water, dr bronners scent free liquid soap and grapefruit seed extract.

I usually fill the sink with water and a bit of Dr. Bronner's Unscented. I used to use Grapefruit Seed Extract, but then I looked into how they get the extract and there are just as many icky chemicals and crap used to extract it so I figured that was counter productive and stopped using it. I haven't tried the other thing, but sounds interesting.

I use an all-natural veggie spray. But washing really well in water - vigorously - can be good too. I was part of an organic farm for the past 12 years and they would talk about how people think that just because something is organic that it doesn't need to be washed well, even if it has been washed before it's in your hands. Not true! I even wash the "triple-washed" salads that come in a bag - they weren't triple-washed by me! Smile
