I know this may sound weird, but.....

So many great sounding smoothie recipes call for bananas. I know I'm a rarity, but I don't eat bananas! Just don't like them. Blech! Does anyone have suggestions about what can be substituted in for bananas in these types of recipes? I'm assuming the purpose of them is to create some sweetness, and a lot of "texture". Thanks for any help you can offer!

Thanks for any help you can offer! Hey Runnergirl, I'm a big 'nana fan BUT not all the time and actually rarely in a smoothie! I think that the fact that they add a lot of body and sweetness to a smoothie is why they are so common. You can use any fruit - I use lots of blueberries, mango...just have them frozen to help with the "thick" factor! I also like to add ground flax seed, which can give oomph to thicker texture as well. I love frozen peaches, especially if I use lots of greens. The peach flavor seems to really 'pop' out. Strawberries are good. Love blueberries, but don't look at it, just drink it. Creates a rather yucky color! Fresh pineapple is really good, actually I like the pineapple with the banana. My husband is suppose to eat oatmeal everyday. Sometimes he doesn't want it for breakfast so I'll throw it in his smoothie for the day and that thickens it up nicely.

FYI…Wild4Stars is right, the oatmeal is GREAT in smoothies! Just try it once. Heidi

Definitely yes on the mango, flaxseed, and oatmeal. Perhaps also wheat germ and oatbran, though they may need to be mixed with a little water and heated first. Should be delicious, though!
