Date Night
Posted Friday, April 8, 2011 at 7:58 AM

Friday night is usually the night we tell our teenagers that they must fend for themselves as we are having "date night". Although we were planning on hitting a local vegan pizza place and then going bowling, I've decided instead to be more creative and cost-conscious. I'm packing us a picnic dinner to take to the beach and watch the sunset. I'm planning on Lemony "Beef" Garbanzo spread sandwiches on whole grain bread with slices of tomato, red onion and green leaf lettuce, a big thermos of piping hot "Cream" of Celery Root soup, and already peeled orange segments. Maybe some kind of vegan dessert. Not sure. Then coming home and popping in a movie and nibbling on air popped popcorn seasoned with "Chicken" powder and seaweed (it's surprisingly good).

Is anyone else doing date night and if so, how are you handling it?

last month we all went out for pizza. (hold the cheese on mine!) then bowling..

i am thinking one month this summer to go zip lineing.

don't mind me.. i am just excited it finnally is warming up and can think of so many things i have waited to do.

We have a vegan market here in Seattle in the University District called "Sidecar Pigs For Peace" that sells nothing but vegan products: people food, pet food, cookbooks, purses, etc. They have a "chicken" bouillon powder that isn't real chicken but sure tastes good. We usually sprinkle that on popcorn along with some Asian sesame seed and seaweed seasoning. We both used to use a whole cube of butter on our popcorn but found this savory combo instead and we really enjoy it.

Our date night was always get the kids (12 year old twins and 8yr old) in bed and order out pizza/chinese/sandwiches/KFC. We still do it, but it's tomatoe pie or tofu and veggies. Lately (after the last chinese food meal made me feel extremely ill -- thought it might be my heart, it was so bad) I've been making my treats at home. Tonight might be pizza. I know my hubby misses ordering out, but he still gets his quota of unhealthy food when he's working. I miss getting out of cooking it myself, but I'm coping and feeling less sick.

you be surprised at how many regular pizza places can make vegan pies. If you're not watching your weight or sodium, an olive oil base, with caramelized onions, kalmata olives and roasted garlic is very good. Or very thin tomato base, with every veggie they have in the house (most pizza places have salad)is good also.

We occasionally go to those buffet pizza places (yes, its true) and my husband always asks if they will make a vegetarian pizza without cheese (aka vegan). They always say sure and that it will take about 15 minutes. By the time we are finishing our salad, the pizza is ready and on the buffet line. Interestingly, the pizza goes really quickly so we have to keep an eye on the buffet to make sure we get a slice or two before it is gone.

I was reading through this thread and saw that you mention Sidecar! I've only been once to their bakesale but plan to go again soon. It looks like a great store.

Have you ever been to Pizza Pi down the street for the vegan pizza?

As a matter of fact we just took our son there last weekend for his 17th birthday. It was excellent! I recommend the "Pepperific" or the "Margherita". The Wayward Cafe is right down the street from Pizza Pi and Sidecar and is also Vegan.

If you are ever in Orlando check out Ethos Vegan Kitchen. I'm telling you I could eat there every single day. Everything on the menu is 100% vegan and 100% GOOD !! They have daily specials and Mondays are Rueben's, the one thing I miss from my meat eating days over 12 years ago! THEY ARE AWESOME! The place is usually packed on Mondays! They have vegan pizza, vegan cookies, several sandwiches. Chick'n Marsala is delicious. Just get there, something on the menu will be your new favorite thing! I haven't made it to the Sunday brunch yet, but it sounds incredible.

Thank you for the recommendation. I'll check out both of them.
