How Long to See Benefits?
Posted Friday, April 8, 2011 at 11:29 AM

I've been doing the vegan thing for 13 days now (i got a headstart on the kickstart) and i don't feel any different. How long does it take to feel all the extra energy the vegans have promising? i'm as tired and achy as ever. i cut out coffee (still drink tea), sugar and i'm eating beans and whole grains and veggies faithfully. I'm worried vegans are promising a healthier me to entice me in order to support their environmental and animal rights agendas. these are agendas i also support, but am i really going to feel better one of these days?

impatiently yours,

Heather

haa haa yes you will..
Before vegan i started out with lots of energy. I thought i ate good and I exercised everyday. I didn't notice that much of a change.. I always could and still can run circles around most people.

After vegan.. I still have the energy. The first thing i noticed once i stopped to pay attention was my middle felt better. I didn't get what i call a "food hangover" that people get from the SAD diet. You know the feeling of needing to go for a walk after a big meal. Not really ready to bound off the couch. Maybe even need a nap. That is all gone.

Stick with it. There are no hidden ajendas. It's all for you. It will happen. I do believe if you want energy tho you have to exercise. It actually gives you more energy! OH and take B-complex.

It sounds like you may be detoxing a bit; I'm no expect on these things, but if you're following the plan like it says, perhaps your body is adjusting to the healthy foods and ridding itself of the junk. Stick with it (it's 21 days--you can do it!). Also make sure you're not stuffing yourself even with healthy foods. I'm a border-line binge-eater and I'm guilty of eating past when I'm full.

Anyway, hope I could help.

As for an agenda---I'm pretty familiar with Dr. Barnard's work and I doubt there's an agenda. Check out T. Colin Campbell's "China Study" for further proof that the Western diet is making us sick. Btw, Animal Rights advocates do have an agenda--they want us to stop hurting and exploiting animals; how can that be bad?

Be prepared...

Hi Heather.

13 days is a while, and it is a little surprising that you don't feel any different. Ask your friends if you are looking any better. And think about it. I am interviewing Irene a lot (we are making a documentary about this) and I sometimes ask her a question that makes your realize... "oh yeah, that is amazing, the headache is gone... or I didn't crave chocolate for two days and didn't notice it until you mentioned it!" .

If you were already super healthy and in great shape, but eating lots of cheese and eggs, you should definitely loose weight, and have a much healthier heart for it. Keep it up with us as we get to our 21 days, and see what happens. The people who designed this and choose 21 days probably put a lot of thought, and research, into the duration.

I think maybe some celebrity types overexaggerate the benefits so much that maybe we expect to be floating on the ceiling with euphoria or something through this diet. I'm not running any marathons or anything, but what I have noticed is that my belly bloat is going away and I haven't had any reflux. Keep at it; you may not see any overt changes yet, but inside, your tissues are definitely changing and your body is getting a little bit happier every day.

You also may be reacting to reduced caffeine intake.

Don't make a New Year's Resolution...make a Decision!

You may want to try adding something as simple as a B12 supplement to your diet. Because of my surgery I can no longer absorb it by eating and must take a supplement so mine is monitored pretty closely but I can tell you that low energy is a problem if you are low on B vitamins.

are you getting enough water? sleep? calories?

Also, not all the folks here are here promoting environmental/animal rights agendas. I'm here (and bringing along hubby and son with me) for health reasons pure and simple. Okay, well maybe also for economic reasons too - the healthier we can get buying beans, rice, fruit, veggies, the less money we need to spend on prescriptions, lab work, and doctor visits. Environmental issues and animals just happen to be a side effect. As hubby says "I'll still eat a steak if I want to...but I don't feel as well afterward so I'm not going looking for it" And, he can see the results as well - quite a few people have commented to him on his weight loss; his pants are loose (okay so there's an expense - buying pants that actually fit properly LOL); and his latest lab results might mean that he can cut back on his cholesterol medication (we'll see, his doctor visit is early next week). Since he hates doctor visits, blood draws, and taking meds more than he likes meat, it's worth the trade off for him. I still offer to buy son tuna if he wants it - but he's fine as long as we have chickpea salad on hand (sub for tuna salad) and he still likes a slice or three of cheese to snack on. Odds are good that we'll be going out for sushi to celebrate DS' 13th birthday (it's his favorite restaurant) - and I'll probably get some veggie sushi and miso soup while the guys get whatever they choose. So, no animal 'agenda' here - just improving health.

Heather, when any program is oversold with wild claims, we have to back off and assess for ourselves whether it is worth following. I think there is also a fine line between rampant enthusiasm and deceit. The latter is not always easy to spot, and it may be relatively rare in the health care field (except for drug ads).

Following the vegan diet, I lowered my glucose scores and lost weight (didn't want to or need to). Period. No great surge of energy or euphoria, but the benefit to my sugar metabolism is worth a lot to me.

As I was carrying my 25# sack of rice home from Costco, I remembered that I use to carry the equivalent of 2 of those with me everywhere. It took 10 months for me to normalize 50 pounds lighter. That was 4 years ago and none of it has returned although I ate and continue to eat all I want of these low energy dense foods.

Thanks for your responses. I actually initially drawn to vegan for the environmental and animal rights reasons. But I got excited when I read about the possibility of feeling more robust. I'll be sticking with vegan for the political reasons. If i'm fortunate enough to get an energy increase, that will be a nice side benefit. Maybe I am still adjusting. I was eating a lot of animal products (lots of dairy especially) an drinking a lot of coffee before I made these changes.

I've been doing this for over a week too, have not found huge changes in my energy, but have lost 1.5 lbs, and my thinking feels clearer. Can't really explain it, it just is!

So that's a good thing.

This is the second time I started the kickstart (OK Jan and April blended together). The first time I noticed differences in energy levels. In Jan. I didn't notice changes in how I felt, but others around me did.
