Hi all,

I've been Vegan for around 2 years, and I've never been healthier; I work out pretty hard daily. I do have a problem though, I am not to keen on tofu or all those "fake" meats and I'm tired of bean Crying or Very sad...any suggestions???

I suscribed to Brendan Brazier's Thrive in 30 progam several months ago. It's free. He explains how and what to eat veganwise to acheive athleticism. Part of his advice is to minimize soy. He's big on hemp protein and lots of other plant based protein ideas.
Anyway, check it out.

I have found the fake meats and cheeze a bit on the icky side (tasted and threw it out). I am not yet tired of beans (a vegan since January 23rd, 2010) but I am beginning to need more variety. Sorry, I have no suggestion about tofu substitutes, although the last time I was at the Grannary one of the clerks tried to get me to buy hemp seed for protein. I was a bit leary of hemp since the only use I had ever heard of it was bird seed and marajuana. This gal said she ate it as a snack all day long and loved it.

It is good to know that you can be healthy enough to be athletic. I have wondered if my strength would remain the same, get worse, or perhaps get better.

Jasmine, the hemp seeds are wonderful so don't hesitate to try them. I add a tablespoon or so to my morning oatmeal, and have added a scoop to my salads as well.

One of the stores I like to shop at (Choices Market) sells small sample sized packets so maybe you could see if that's an option where you shop, too.

All we are saying is "Give Peas a Chance"

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips, I've tried hemp, not too much into it though. I do like the Nitrofusion protien powder I've been drinking, it seems to help. I think I eat way too much peanut butter though haha. Jasmine, its great that you've been vegan since January keep it up! As for Athletisism, you'll find your body is a whole lot more capable without animal products to slow you down Smile

Fake meats are for beginners. No offense intended, just speaking from experience. Plus they are full of preservatives, chemicals and MSG. They are not healthy. Occasional organic, non-gmo tofu is not unhealthy. In fact I made a pretty tasty vegan lasagna today that used tofu instead of ricotta cheese. mmmmm

Anyway, Im a bodybuilder myself, I strength train 5 days a week. I juice at least 4 cups a day of carrot and apple juice and alternate between Soy http://www.herbspecialists.com/product.php?Stock_Number=3025-0 , hemp protein and seeds (there is no thc in hemp BTW) made by Nutiva http://nutiva.com/ and a Vegan Pea protein called Love and Peas. (I highly recommend) http://www.herbspecialists.com/product.php?Stock_Number=3082-9 Its not easy to get the vegan certification.

Since going vegan, I have lost body fat but not strength. Being vegan doesn't mean you have to be a skinny hippy. Smile You can be a beefy, muscular hippy, like me. Smile

Theres a champion UFC fighter out there that is vegan. Don't know his name, I dont watch UFC, but I love when people break molds.

If I am not mistaken hemp can give you a false positive on a drug test. Might want to check that out for certain if it applies to you.

Hemp seeds DO contain THC. Here is a report from a 2000 study out of Berkeley, CA regarding the increased usage of hemp products and drug testing.

Somehow I knew when I typed that that I would be starting an argument. Smile

I take it back, Hemp does contain thc I should have said Hemp wont get you high. A plant cultivated for marijuana has a 3 to 15 percent THC content or more, while industrial hemp generally contains one percent or less. Anyway its a great source of plant protein and EFA's and yould have to eat ALOT of it to not pass a drug test.

From Nutiva's website... "Hempseed is considered by leading researchers and medical doctors to be one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet. Shelled hempseed is packed with 33 percent pure digestible protein and is rich in iron and vitamin E as well as omega-3 and GLA. A recent report funded by the Canadian government states that hemp protein is comprised of 66 percent high-quality edistin protein, and that hempseed contains the highest percentage of this of any plant source. Hemp also contains three times the vitamin E contained in flax. Unlike soy, hemp is not genetically modified, and it doesn't contain the anti-nutritional qualities commonly found in soy."
