Kickstop?
Posted Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 2:53 PM

What's going to happen after the 21 days are over? That's this coming Friday. It would be helpful if we were informed about this - like are these forums still going to be available? Will it just be the participants and not the moderators?

Creating short-term change is very different than creating long-term change. (For some people, short-term change will last, but for many, it will not.) For those of us who want to stick with this, it would be helpful to have more guidance about long-term planning (beyond "stick with it!"), and also to know if this site will be up and operating after Friday.

Great question. It would be nice to have a "Long Term Follow-Up" Plan. A go-to place for all our questions and concerns.

I would love it if this support forum continued. If it does not, I think we should find a yahoo group that is for vegans. That way we can still all talk to each other and get different opinions and advice.

We could all Join SparkPeople.com and start a PCRM Kickstart Team. I'm already on the web site and a member of several vegan and vegetarian teams. I'm the Leader of the "Eat To Live" Team based on Dr. Fuhrman's books.

It's a fun place to blog with other people, create a Spark Page, there are tons of recipes (not all vegan of course), exercise videos, TONS of articles and support, AND it's 100% totally FREE!

Check it out www.SparkPeople.com

My Spark name is Wild4Stars also.

This forum is my lifeline. Even if I don't write - and I usually don't, it helps to keep me focussed day by day.

I agree: It would be great if our forum/community could be kept active. It truly has been a great source of support.

"They" say that habits can be broken if you stick to the "new way" for 21 days. This applies to many things - like becoming a vegan, or cleaning your car and keeping it clean etc. So if you can do the 21 days - you are well are your way to a lifetime of good health!

LoopyLou - You haven't created a SparkPage on SparkPeople so I have no way to find you and "friend" you. If you'll create a SparkPage you'll open up a variety of opportunities to interact with people.

Just searched again. You're not showing up yet. Maybe it just takes some time. I'll check again tomorrow. We'll figure it out.

I vote for starting our own group and not being part of one already started through another organization or philosophy. It seems people on here are from many different schools of thought - some are MacDougall followers, some Eat to Live, some not affiliated with anything but wanting to see what it's like to be vegan, etc. I think it's best to "meet on neutral ground" and not have latent influences of other plans that may not be of interest to everyone. That seems the most fair to everyone and what has been working on here. A Yahoo group would be great.

Also, I have to respond to the "They say" comment about a habit being created in 3 weeks. I have heard that before and it simply is not true. If only it were! But first of all, habits are not mathematical formulas that work according to time or schedule - they are different for each person depending on that person's motivation obstacles.

And also, there are far more times people are able to do something precisely because it is short-term - and then drop it over time because they lose interest or motivation. So if three weeks made a habit, that would not happen.

An example would be how crowded gyms are after January 1st, with everyone starting on their resolutions. Come back in March and many of those people are not working out any more. A guy I knew who ran a gym said that their membership would skyrocket in January and people would have to wait for machines. A couple of months later, many of those new members would have stopped coming.

Change over time takes more than just sticking with something short-term. It does not take care of itself on its own after that. For some people it does, but for many it does not. More has to be considered besides the time element, such as what motivates you, what has worked for you in the past, how realistic these life changes are for you, if you are doing them in the extreme, etc. When you take things like that into account, you have a far better chance of sticking with something.

Ok, so I am behind in my start; are you saying that now that I have found this place, it will go away at the end of the week?

I wonder if they will just start a new round? Am I the only one here who has been here since the beginning?

BTW: my name is "Willow" and I have learned a tremendous amount from reading here. I have been doing this exactly 4 days....doing well so far, but hate to think this is going to go away right when I am getting started.

I need to be able to keep coming here.

I am also just starting the 21 days! I hope I can keep going! I thought, when signing up, that my 21 days would start when I signed up but then received the email for day 18...could someone please let us know the "plan" after 1 days?

There IS a new round planned for March, which is ingenious foresight on the part of PCRM. Hard hitting focus and support in chunks can be enormous boosts for change.

At the same time, an ongoing community for moving it all forward is important. Support and connection is an important part of success, especially when change and going against the tide are part of the picture.

Great ideas on this thread!

I can't imagine they'll just shut this thread down. They may not monitor it like the have been, but I would imagine it will still be up. I did the kick start in October, but had to re-sign up for this one.

I just went back to the old thread and was able to post there. So I'm assuming if we all continue to post and help each other on this thread, it will remain active.

Lani, I'm thrilled to hear about the new Kickstart in March. I really need this forum.

Awesome to know that a new round will be starting in March. I for one will do my best to stick with the ideas and basic plan information I have gotten from here. I am doing really well so far and I don't want to lose my momentum. I assume the daily emails will stop, but since information is archived here, we can always come and re-read and refresh.

I think if we all still come here, we can keep this thing going! I don't get the chance to come here every day, but hopefully this place won't just up and die after 21 days.
