Cheese / Animal Rennet
Posted Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 8:03 AM
Was wondering if Susan, or someone else could tell me if animal rennet is used in pizza cheese, or any of the myriad of other cheese foods that so many people find hard giving up. I have a friend who is a hypnotist (she's vegan and an activist). She often educates people about what rennet is, as an aversive suggestion to shock and disgust people away from eating cheese. Ever wonder why cheese (like parmesan) smells like vomit? Think: baby calves (veal) and digestive enzymes. This should put the kabash on any cravings (non-vegan, or vegan) for cheese. Real, or faux.

For cheese.. all i have to do is think about a cheese pizza and the layer of grease on top that i always used to pat off with a paper towel.. then the grease in the box that i would throw away.. really a layer of orange grease doesn't seem all that appealing does it? yuck

a good fresh pizza doesn't have a greasy layer on top (or it shouldn't) - we have made our own pizza for several years and fresh from the oven it's not at all greasy (or shouldn't be anyway). Even my 12 yr old won't eat commercial pizza - the crust is tasteless and the top is greasy compared to our homemade whole wheat crust and fresh toppings (even when we use cheese). The rennet is something to watch for because even some of the non-dairy cheeses use animal-based rennet. --Deb

yup. Sometimes they're simply non-dairy for folks who have lactose or other dairy intolerances but they are not vegan. There are also some that not only use animal rennet but also contain casein tucker way down in the ingredients list. Goota look for "vegan" on the label, otherwise it might not be all that different from "regular' cheese except for what kind of milk is used. --Deb

This reminds of a time I went to a gathering where the host boasted of buying "vegetarian cheese" from a very fancy cheese shop in Manhattan especially for me. I thought he meant it was fake cheese, i.e., vegan. But what he actually meant is that it did not have rennet. Luckily, I was skeptical of his philanthropic efforts. I also felt bad so ended up pretending to eat it.

When I see people (strangers) eating pizza, which is probably the most popular cheese food, I have to hold myself back to not go over and educate them about what they are really eating ... and supporting.

The info below came into my e-mail yesterday about Pizza Hut cheese. While I don't have a way to verify this, it does make me think about all the processed foods Americans are eating. Can we trust food manufacturers with our health? "John Bunting details how Pizza Huts cheese supplier Leprino Foods uses a silicone-based industrial chemical in the patented manufacturing of Pizza Cheese. That chemical Polymethylsiloxane has no FDA approval for use as a food ingredient. Polymethylsiloxane is sold by Dow-Corning as Antifoam FG 10. THIS MATERIAL IS APPROVED BY FDA FOR USE IN FOOD PLANTS ONLY AS AN ANTI-FOAMING AGENT FOR BOILER WATER. In its patented manufacturing process, Leprino Foods liberally sprays Polydimethylsiloxane on cheese granules. Leprinos Pizza Cheese supplied to Pizza Huts contains about 900 parts per million of Polymethylsiloxane: 90 times higher residue concentration than FDA allows when Polymethylsiloxane is used as a boiler water anti- foaming agent."

Oh m'gosh that's horrible. More evidence to me that as bad as I see things are, they are actually worse. No wonder, when I was an omni, that Pizza Hut and Domino's too tasted off to me. Extremely salty too, moreso than non-chain pizzerias.
