raw foods

humm..i am not doing 80% raw foods, if that means i can't cook a black bean burger or my veggies...

i like the soups.. perhaps i should mix in more salads that don't have any cooked veggies?

if i put the veggies in a blender and make a green shake does that count as part of the 80%?

Are you trying to eat 80 percent raw?

Nope i am just trying to eat vegan and if i lose weight that is great.
i got that celeb phone call.. he said something about eating 80% raw.. so i thought maybe i was doing something wrong.
maybe by cooking too much i was losing nutrients? dunno.. just trying to make better eating choices, be more healthy, be kind to animals, and if i lose a few lbs doing it .. sweeeeet.

Oh okay. Yes, John Salley eats a mostly raw diet, as does one of our other celebrity coaches Brendan Brazier. I think having in mind to eat raw foods such as fruits and vegetables as part of your routine is totally important. Trying to be 80 percent or totally raw is a whole other skill set. Not a bad one mind you, just different. If you aren't there and never intend to be, that's okay too.

If you are interested in what research says about a raw diet, you would enjoy Brenda Davis' and Vesanto Melina's new book Becoming Raw. They gather all the research currently avaialble about raw diets.

one note (from a non-raw person) is that there's a max temperature to which foods can be heated and still be considered "raw". I don't know a lot of details (and it probably varies by food type - some stuff cooks through really fast) but I do know a few folks who eat raw.

One great thing about soup - the nutrients lost in cooking are there in the broth which you are eating anyway Smile

re: soup.. great! that's what i thought.. but was not quite sure due to heating it up to boiling.

soups really don't need to be boiled, a good simmer until it's thoroughly heated is all it needs

CCH,
I'm semi-raw, varying from 65-85% depending on the day or my mood, so if I may, I'd like to give you a little advice.

Concentrate on vegan first. Just worry about eating a healthy vegan diet, which can be difficult in and of itself, and don't worry about raw foods for now.

Raw foodism can be extremely healthy, but it can also be extremely dangerous if practiced incorrectly. It is also one of the "extremes" of nutrition in which you find people who preach things as gospel which are not factual, and if you don't do your research, you could end up believing some very incorrect and even dangerous information.

Take it from someone who has been down this road – you've got enough on your (proverbial and literal) plate right now, without having to worry about raw foodism. You're doing great by converting to veganism, and if you're following the PCRM guidelines, you're eating a fantastically healthy diet already. If, in time, you want to learn more about raw foods, there are some great resources available (the book Susan mentioned is a good one!), and you know where to find me, of course. Wink

Take your time, enjoy the amazing variety of plant foods you're learning about, and don't stress about what % of raw you're eating. Some raw is good, more raw is great, but don't feel like you must do a certain thing – just eat whole, healthy plant foods, and you'll be fine! Very Happy
