hungry all the time...am I doing right???
Posted Friday, December 31, 2010 at 12:27 AM
I am hungry all the time...not sure if this is something to do with I am nursing or something wrong with my menu/portion??? I eat breakfast, then, 2-3 hours, I am hungry already...then, lunch, again, 2-3 hours later, I am looking for snack...dinner, and mid-night snack...feeling hungry all the time... today, at dinner, we had soba noodle with lots vegetable (my husband also had pork chops)...an hour later, I am hungry, and he is still full...I don't recall I was this hungry before going vegan... I am not sure how much portion is the right to eat...or should I eat till I am full... for example, I made this Hoppin' john salad...but, the instruction is for 10 1/2 cup servings, so that is 5 1-cup servings...do we eat only 1 serving (which is 1 cup)... what snack is good to eat...is it good idea to snack all the time...

Hi Wen, Is the 1/2 cup of Hoppin John the only thing you ate? I think you're meant to eat that in addition to something else. For example, 1/2 cup of Hoppin John, plus 2 cups of green salad with some healthy dressing, plus a whole wheat tortilla. If you are nursing a baby, I think you burn more calories and would need to eat slightly more, but not a lot more. Are you making sure to drink lots of water? Are you eating enough fiber? Are you getting good servings of whole grains? And complex carbohydrates in the form of legumes and starches like sweet potatoes or winter squash?

Hi there, I do eat in short intervals and I find that really helpful. I usually start with a filling breakfast followed by a mid morning snack then of course my lunch. I like to snack on nuts and fruits and I have noticed that it keeps me filled for quite some time. Another good snack is rice cakes with apple sauce. It is a dense cake mostly made from brown rice or wild rice and keeps you full for a long day. Also, I do include a lot of drinks in my diet. Its either water with some fruits, water and lemon juice, green tea (my fav), black tea with a splash of almond milk. Before going vegan, I was often dehydrated because sometimes, my body wouldn't understand whether I am thirsty or hungry, But since I have also started drinking lots of water, it has really helped me! Maybe you also want to include beans and lentils in your meals? Plant protein with veggies is an awesome combo and once your body starts getting used to this new diet, it will surely adapt to those changes and help you curb those hunger pangs. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck! Cheers Vegan Kitty

Hi wen! I understand your fears. When we switch to eating higher fiber, lower fat fare, it is a whole new ball game! Here's the beauty of it - you get to eat according to appetite. Scary stuff when we're used to controlling portions! But if you are elminating processed foods, free fats for the most part, and eating whole, you'll be able to eat a lot more quantity and let your appetite be your guide. This will take some getting used to, and you'll need to deal with some of the anxieties of this kind of eating freedom. It is SO worth the effort! And yes, you may find that you need to eat a lot more often. Not a problem, just be prepared! I too eat several times a day and who says we shouldn't? It's just being a good animal. That's my eating motto. Be a good animal. You ARE going to be hungrier as a nursing mom, so just be prepared with lots of nutritious options and eat as needed - even every couple of hours if necessary! Lani Facebook

I was doing what the meal plan saying on Jan 3, dinner...there is only hoppin' john salad, and kwick kale...and no other added...that is where I am confused about...I am hungry...but, that is the meal plan, isn't it...can I add more, like bread, pasta, bean, etc. to the menu... Yes, that is right...fear, and still not really comfortable on this way of eating...deep in side, I am still counting carb, counting portion, counting protein, and counting on how much I could eat...

The beauty of eating as a healthy vegan is you don't have to "count" anything. Let all that counting go. Just eat when you're hungry, eat until you are satisfied, and if you're hungry again in 2 hours - eat again. I've had friends say to me, "I can't believe you're losing weight, you eat all the time." I never let myself get overly hungry, that is a danger zone for me. Stay vegan, stay very low (no added) fat, avoid processed foods, and you'll do great.

HI Wen, I understand... my husband jokes that some of my portions are made for "baby hughy" lol.. BUT as long as they are with the plan.. a well rounded, no added oils, i did very well... you may not want to.. but i lost weight and have kept it off.. the greatest thing is when you really do get it right and realize you can stop counting, eat when you are hungry, and be healthy.... honestly i busted out laughing... I have never found eating so freeing before..!! Never did i imagine i could eat all I want and have it work.. what kind of diet is this?? who would have thought??? free from counting, free from worrying if i can have a snack, free from cravings, free from portion control, yes and one of the best...free from hunger!! just eat the well rounded plan, not processed, drink, don't add oils... you are doing good.. give the baby an extra kiss...

Our menu is a suggestion that you can follow strictly, loosely, or ignore all together if you want. The only "rules" are vegan foods and focusing on low-fat foods (i.e., not junk or fried foods). You don't have to follow any portion sizes. Those are simply there to provide nutritional information. Eat the Hoppin John and kale until you are satisfied. And yes, breast feeding burns A LOT of calories.

Hi, I understand your concern. When I went vegan in July, it seemed like all I did was eat! I'd eat till full whenever I was hungry, usually five times a day!!!!! But I wasn't gaining any weight, so I decided not to panic, but to allow myself six months for my body to adjust to the change. Now, six months later, my appetite has regulated itself and I'm starting to lose weight. I also am no longer diabetic, am no longer bothered by IBS, and am off my routine asthma meds. So I'd say, eat when you're hungry and don't worry about it, as long as what you eat is healthy and you're getting plenty of fiber. Focus on eating mindfully and enjoying your food. Your body will thank you for it. Linda

wow.. talk about fear.. first the fear was, "omg, what am i going to eat?" then it was, "am i eating too much?" a preview of the next one is, "will i stop losing weight? will i look anorexic?" so i went from eating everything until i leaned i could feed myself, to making sure i was doing it right, to making sure i wasn't missing any nutriants, to finding recipes i liked, leveling off the eating to what was comfortable and adding a few fats just in case. not too many fears right now.. doing better.. it is scary at first, a whole new way of thinking. oh..btw.. not losing too much.. eating has leveled off and i am doing fine..

I think in the beginning everybody tries to make it harder than it really is. And probably fear is part of the issue. I know at first I fed on the fear projected by friends and family - not enough protein, you can't have healthy bones without milk, you must eat "fill in the blank" to be healthy. The fear eventually moves aside and we quit making it so hard. Somebody in an early post said that it is SUCH an easy way to eat. It really is.

Hello, I can relate to the fear. I noticed over on McDougall forum that my first post (healthy hiker - it didn't occur to me to use the same username here lol was way back in April. I did the Mary's Mini last June and lost 10 pounds in one month and wasn't hungry eating just 3 times a day. When I add in exercise my appetite goes up, I am hungry every 2-3 hours and especially right after an exercise session! I remember the carb diet from the 90's and then the protein diet that is still popular so just felt really confused. I'm disappointed with myself that it was so long ago that I knew about this way of eating and still have not implemented it into my life. Husband is a meat and potatoes guy but has recently put on a lot of weight so has to get new pants or change eating habits. He is open to changing for the first time ever..yay! I've rambled but I want to say thank you in advance because I think there will be lots of encouragement and support here (as there is over at McDougall forum). Right now I really need encouragement to eat healthy because my sister just lost 40 pounds over the last 9 weeks by using the high protein, pre-packaged food diet that she paid A LOT of money for and I know that it is not good for a person but I am still tempted - eek!. I want to "go vegan" and lose weight and be healthy. I have a lot of weight to lose - 40-50 pounds. It seems like eating this way I would probably lose quickly also but be healthier during the process, right???

HI Pinkleo.. Well fast is relative.. but yes you can lose a lot of weight.. for me it came of about 1.5 a week.. I was happy because i had gone years without losing anything... I would never choose that high protein, low carb meat diet. Yes it does "work" but at what price? For one the factory farming of animals.. Also your kidneys, you just plain ole want to avoid at all costs damaging your kidneys. I did go to my doc after the last 3 month kickstart. I had him check absolutely everything. If there were any problems eating vegan I wanted to know about it, so i could ajust with supplements or different foods. I got the best numbers ever. I do take a few supplements... a multivitamen, a time release b complex and a time release c. Sometimes a fish oil with "no mercury" statement on the front.

If you're hungry every 2 hours, eat every two hours. Nursing is a whole other ballgame as far as how much you need to take in. I typically eat breakfast around 7 am, a snack around 9:30, lunch around noon, snack around 3, dinner around 6. Then I'll do some treadmill time (exercise). An evening snack may or may not happen depending on how things are going (as a diabetic, sometimes I do "have to" eat something if my glucose tests low before bed). That's one of the nice things about the kickstart - snack ideas are built into the plan. And, yes, the menu plan is more a guideline as to what types of things to eat, ways to incorporate new foods, new types of foods, etc. But, we rarely follow it exactly - we'll use the same ingredients perhaps but use a favorite recipe from the Veganomicon instead of the given recipe suggestion. For example, dinner might be a pre-made veggie patty (which we don't do - generally too much sodium for hubby's BP and too much soy for my nutty endocrine system) and we'll do the black bean patty from the Veganomicon instead. Or it might have the yummy carrot red pepper soup (which, BTW, is already on my radar this time around! LOL) and we'll do a nice red lentil soup instead (or vice versa). Over all, we're hitting all the same groups but not necessarily in the same recipes or on the same days. --Deb R

Wen- I'm glad you asked this question! I'm breastfeeding and starving all the time as well... I was wondering about this, so I'm glad you asked so I could read all the great replies. Weight loss has not been that great for me after having a baby. I lost all the pregnancy weight in the first 2 months, but then have been stuck ever since. I haven't gained or lost in 9 months now, very frustrating. I'm hoping this new healthier way of eating will do the trick.

thanks so much for all these wonderful replies...these are soooo helpful... now, I understood more about these meal plan...this is my 2nd kickstart...the first one I gave up after 4 days because I was not able to follow "exact" meal plan, and I ate all the time, felt so "wrong", and I gave up... knowing to use the meal plan as a direction/idea, I am so looking forward to now... as for loosing weight after giving birth, I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight now, but, I do want to loose another 10 lb (my idea weight)...a little scared to loose weight though while nursing... and I do have this belly need to work on after pregnancy...start doing Lani's 7 second workout..will see how it goes...

Returning back to veganism has been great for me and my husband. We have both lost weight, but eat very well (and much cheaper, too!) and we both feel so much better about ourselves and the planet. I'm a real foodie, so I cook a lot on the weekends for the whole week. I don't follow the menu plan at all. I follow what my body tells me. I'll make a few different dishes from scratch, like white bean soup with kale, and we eat this all week for lunch and dinners. Several years ago, I spent thousands of dollars on a "nutritionist" and followed Atkins. I couldn't afford it and was starting to feel really lost about my diet and what I should do to get more healthy and lose weight. I read "eating animals" and immediately was disgusted by the food industry and how unhealthy our diet was. And yes, I eat ALL THE TIME! I keep peanut butter and bread at work, and other healthy snacks. I'm not afraid of carbs anymore and we'll have pasta and bread in moderation. I'm so happy to have found this community and the research on the PCRM website is fascinating. The "where do you get your protein?" question is so nauseating!!!!! ~ christine
