Eating out
Posted Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 6:59 PM
Since today's message was about eating out, I thought it might be fun and helpful to have a thread about what vegan successes - and failures - we have had at restaurants. Today we tried a new (to us) Mexican restaurant called Taco Real. It turned out to be sort of a fast food type place with a pretty limited menu, but they did have a Vegetable Wrap, so I ordered that and a side of guacamole. The wrap had rice, black beans, corn, peppers, and lettuce & tomatoes wrapped up in a tortilla. It also had a little bit of grated cheese -- which was NOT listed on the menu. I went ahead and ate it because the amount was so small and I didn't want to make a fuss, but it taught me a lesson that I cannot assume that just because cheese isn't listed on the menu that it won't be included. BTW, the wrap was REALLY GOOD and I plan to try to make something similar myself.

I've been vegetarian since 2000 and vegan only since January this year. I remember once I asked about a soup being vegetarian and I was told "yes, there is no meat in it." When it came it totally looked and tasted like chicken broth, so I asked again and was told that yes there was chicken "broth" in it, but no REAL chicken!! You have to learn how to ask the question. "Is this made with meat or meat broth?" AND it's never going to be perfect. People hear what they want to hear and answer what they think you want to hear!! And I'm totally clear that I don't have perfection down yet. I stand by my motto that my path is one of "progress not perfection!"

We went to the CA Pizza Kitchen tonight. Before we went my daughter looked on line and they had info for vegetarian and vegan. So the things listed were "ask for it without cheese or sauce or ask for this sauce, etc". I was so happy. I got a nice pasta dish and a salad without the cheese and it was very good. There are many restaurants that don't list things like that. But yes you do have to ask about meat, fish and chicken. Some people think that chicken and fish are not meat too. And then they look at us like we are weird.

We went out to eat last night and I told the waitress that I don't eat meat, dairy, or eggs. Then, I started asking her about various dishes and how they are made. She didn't realize, until I told her, that butter counts as dairy. So, I told her exactly what I don't eat. However, when she brought my meal to me, she brought me a little dish of cheese on the side because she wasn't sure if I ate cheese or not. At least she put it on ths side. This is the first time though that a wait staff person hasn't "gotten it".

Friday night, my husband came downtown so we could see "Crazy Heart" before the Oscars. I called several restaurants around the movie theatre to see if they had a vegan option. Everyone of them did, even if it was something simple like a hummous plate or a garden burger. It was nice to be prepared.

I have found that most restaurants have something, you just have to know how to explain yourself and ask the right questions.

Check yelp.com for vegan in your area, will help narrow it down & perhaps find a restaurant under your radar.

Today my DH & I went on a long hike and then wanted to get lunch out. We were too "yucky" to go to a nice restaurant, and none of the fast food options around sounded good at all. So we tried a little hole-in-the-wall taco place ... I figured I could get salad and rice if nothing else. They had a "build your own enchilida" option, so I ordered avocado enchiladas with green sauce. I forgot to say "no cheese" so they did have some sprinkled on top, but I was able to scrape most of it off. Then for my 2 sides I ordered black beans and grilled veggies. The waitress said they only had refried beans today, so I changed to Mexican rice since I figured the refried beans would be fried in lard. The "grilled veggies" (which I expected to be peppers, onions, etc.) turned out to be frozen mixed vegetables boiled to death, so I could not even eat much of them. But my hubby's taco plate came with a garnish of grilled pineapple and onions ... I tasted that and it was delicious, so I asked for a side of that. Who would have thought that pineapple and onions together would be so good?? The enchiladas weren't bad and it gave us an idea for a similar dish we can make at home to satisy our Mexican food cravings. And I guess I'll have to try grilling pineapple and onions too!
