Tofu at Costco
Posted Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 8:16 PM

Well Costco (or some Costcos) is now carrying House brand tofu in large volume units at a very economical price.

Problem is, every time we go, we can't find it. On their computer, their inventory says yes they are in stock. But then there's nothing when you go look for it. We called beforehand this time and they said they had it. We go there and same story ... out of stock on the shelves. An employee said off the record that certain people were coming in and buying out all the tofu as soon as it appeared on the shelves and to not expect to be able to get it. I'm going to write to Costco corporate to complain, and ask that they put limits per customer.

Has anyone else experienced this at Costco?

Our Costco almost never has it, even though they carry it from time to time. If you have an Asian market near you, you can usually buy it there for much cheaper than even Costco.

We have a huge Asian market near us and their normal price for House brand tofu is $1.19 per pound (as opposed to $2.99 per pound at the regular grocery store) but sometimes it'll go on sale for as cheap as 79 cents per pound. Cool Obviously, when I see that, I stock up and just keep it in the freezer. Plus, you can get a 6 pound tub of it for (I think) around $3, though I never buy that much because my 4-year-old daughter and I are the only ones that eat it.

That is a great tip. Thanks ... I'll look into that.

Who told you that? Freezing tofu is a standard method in vegan food preparation. It makes the tofu more porous when it is thawed (and drained) and thus makes it absorb whatever marinade your using much better. It makes the texture "meatier". In fact, now that I have a Tofu Xpress, I drain and freeze the heck out my tofu. I do it twice actually. I'm pretty sure soy milk can be frozen.
