I FEEL SOOOO FAT AND BLOATED!!!!
Posted Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 9:47 PM
I can't believe how fat and bloated I feel. I tried what everyone told me to not eat so much fiber at once. I really wanted to continue eating this way but I feel fatter than when I was eating meat and dairy. I am doing this for weightloss and this just isn't working the way I thought. Do you think maybe this just isn't for me and my weightloss goal? I need to decide. When I was trying to lose weight with after I had my first baby, I did the Atkins approach and lost a lot of weight. This time after having my baby, I have tried it all. I thought eating Vegan will do the trick! AHHHHHH!!!!! So mad!! Any advise ??? Thanks, Devasha

What is your sodium and water intake like? Are you using more salt to season your food? This could contribute to bloating. I noticed in the beginning that I was bloated a bit but I discovered that I was overcompensating for lack of processed foods and I used more salt than I should. Once I started using Vegit or Spike to season instead of salt, the bloating went away. Also, did you do a cleanse prior to or during the 1st week of the Vegan Challenge? It's good to start a cleanse before a drastic change in diet. I did an ultra body cleanse during the first week of the challenge and I lost lost 6 lbs.

Would I only have liquids if I do the cleanse? I hate feeling this way. I don't want to fail at this but can't seem to feel good in my clothes. I feel worst. I don't put too much salt in my food. Maybe I'm eating too much. I don't know.

I've been vegan for about 10 yrs, and for what its worth these days, I joke that I can eat rusty nails, my digestive system can handle anything Give your body a chance, you are eating alot more fiber, water, etc. Your system may take some time to adjust. Mine did early on, I had gas, bloating, and I don't have any of that anymore. Your body may be "processing" a bit longer, again, it will change. Not to be gross but bathroom visits do not require reading material as a vegan! Weight loss, you are likely to lose weight but I know vegans that eat too much, or those that eat poorly. I lost weight early on, 60 lbs in fact but it didn't happen by accident, I had to exercise and reduce my calories, what I found was that I could eat more as a vegan, and in the 9 yrs since, I have maintained my weight within 5lbs and I don't calorie count, my weight maintains itself. Its a relief. Hang in there, and best of luck. Cheers, Kira

Hi Devasha - you may have seen a lot of weight loss with the Atkins approach but clearly that was not the way to keep the extra pounds off because you're now trying to lose the weight again. What I sense from your post is frustration and impatience. Maybe you're being too hard on yourself and expecting too much too soon. As has been stated here, if you're following the program you shouldn't need to worry about how much you're eating (as long as you're not eating til you're absolutely stuffed). Leave out added fats, try increasing water intake and up the exercise. You may not see instant results on the scale but your body will be much happier and healthier and the fat will disappear slowly but surely. Slow and steady wins the race...

I think I have realized what the problem is. I am not getting satisfied with the foods I'm eating. I feel like I'm hungry all the time. So I eat and I must be eating too much of the good clean stuff that is causing me to feel so bloated and big.

I think you should maybe do a food diary so we can indentify any potential problems.

The cleanse just requires that you eat very clean, just like you are eating with the vegan challenge. It helps to clean out all the stuff that may be caked on the colon wall so that you can really benefit from the new way of eating and allow nutrients and enzymes to be absorbed better in your system.

Oh Theodore, how I would love to meet you! Midwife... I got a belly laugh out of that one!! Okay, now back to business. Devasha (I hope I spelled that right) Please remember you have been giving your body improper food for YEARS. Think of it like a plant. If you give a plant boiled water or distilled water it eventually dies for lack of nutrition. If they don't get nutrients they need, they don't come to their potential. Your body needs TIME. You simply cannot expect your body to heal itself in 3 weeks after not giving it proper fuel for years. Be patient my dear, it will be worth it in the end. Another thought, if you can't be patient to be good to yourself, could you find patience knowing that you are giving life itself to the animals you don't eat? Or the multitude of ways your actions will benefit the earth? Perhaps in time you can value all of these things. But for now, be patient and kind to your body. It works very hard for you.
Always offer kindness and a soft word to the beings around you; You do not know their journey. Your words can be the hug they need or the shove that breaks them.

How much processed foods are you eating? I notice when I make everything from scratch, I feel so much better! I did Atkins once, and although it helped me to lose weight fast, I felt horrible and deprived. Think of going vegan as a lifestyle, not just a diet, and you will probably find yourself being a little less strict on yourself, which will in turn allow you to feel happier and more satisfied. If you feel deprived, you won't stay with it, so allow yourself some room to breathe. When I feel mysef having a hard time, I'll make roasted garlic fries, so I feel like I'm being really bad; but in reality, I'm really not. Another secret weapon is having a tiny thing of vegan icecream around, and I'll have only a spoonful if I just need that sweetness (or a small piece of dark chocolate). Remember, you don't have to prove anything to anyone. Enjoy your new lifestyle and reward yourself for doing well! If worse comes to worst, brush your teeth when you feel hungry. It sucks, but it works, lol. Or even another tip: take yourself out for dinner and a glass of wine one night a week. Just don't go crazy, order something healthy (which will feel more satisying than it probably is because someone else is doing all the work for you!). Just some thoughts on some ways so you don't feel deprived. Part of the journey of all this is to improve your life, not dread every moment.

you might also consider throwing a vegan yogurt (rice, soy, coconut) with some berries into your snacks. The good bacteria in the yogurt might help and berries can be helpful in moving things along. --Deb

I've never tried them as a standalone supplement, but would probiotics help? It seems like they're supposed to help people's digestive track adjust. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Hi Devasha, There was nothing magic to my weight loss, I did at least 3 hours of cardio per week (running, hiking) but I focused mostly on my food. I ate vegan and that helped me discover all sorts of good recipes that were low calorie. Basically I ate oatmeal every morning, a good big bowl and piece of fruit. A fruit snack mid morn, a BIG salad for lunch with low cal dressing and dinner was steamed veggies, and a vegan entree. Soup was always great. I used alot of recipes from Dean Ornish, eat more weigh less. I allowed myself to cheat with extra fruit and veggies/hummus. Hope I answered your question, Cheers, Kira

Oh, that's an unhappy way to feel, isn't it. Seems as though you may have two different feelings going on, yes? Feeling as though you are overweight and unhappy about that, but bloated: is your stomach uncomfortable? What are you having for breakfast? Have a really healthy, substantial breakfast. I would suggest you avoid wheat and gluten and see if your tummy feels better, if you are having that kind of bloat. Getting a bit extra protein (tempeh!) at breakfast makes me have a great start and feel well all day. Take good care of yourself,

Devaasha, I'm struggling with weight loss too. We've been "playin' with a vegan lifestyle since last May. I was in Ireland for a while so I didn't always have an option on eating but, in general stayed pretty true. My husband, who doesn't need to lose weight, has lost at least 15 lbs. I have lost nothing and what I have seems to have settled around my middle. We have also cut out fats. I know I have to up my exercise and plan on doing that but, after reading all the suggestions you have been getting, think i'll start writing food consumption down. Good luck!
