Any diet modifications for a nursing mom?
Posted Monday, September 5, 2011 at 11:23 PM

Hi,

I am starting the vegan diet which so far I LOVE! The recipes are just delicious and I feel great. Just in one day so far Smile I am a nursing mother of a 3 month old boy and I would love to hear any recommendation or modification I have to make on my vegan diet.

Thanks for being there and make a program like this available for free to anybody. That makes a difference in every way.

Way to go Kickstart team!!!!!

hi Erika!
Welcome. Smile
On a previous kickstart, a breastfeeding mother was recommended to keep her intake of fluids high, as well as fresh vegetables and fruit. And to eat as much as she wanted! (That was from Susan Levin, PCRM's head dietitian).

I was almost vegan when I was nursing my third and fourth babies. I didn't make any changes, but had been eating whole grains and lots of veggies before nursing. I think getting lots of nutrients from whole (preferably organic) food is important all the time, but especially when nursing. I nursed one of them for 22 months and the other for 28 months!

Congratulations! This website has a lot of good information for vegan parents and kids, VegFamily.com. This url will take you straight to babies and includes information on breastfeeding, http://www.vegfamily.com/babies-and-toddlers/index.htm.

Also, from the Vegetarian Resource Group, you can find some good posts by dietitians on a range of topics. Here are some for breastfeeding:

The other thing is that, as a nursing mom, you can probably add a little more fat to the plan as well, rather than aiming for under 10% of calories.
