Food Hangover
Posted Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 9:20 PM
Last night my husband went out to get us subs for dinner. I had a large roasted veggie sub (no cheese or meat) and added ff italian dressing at home. This morning I just couldn't think clearly - kept forgetting what I was going to get kind of thing. Also my knee hurt which leads me to believe I was suffering from inflammation. What could they do to roasted vegetables? Does anyone else have this problem when eating out? I just don't know how it could be done on a regular basis and you could feel well.

For me in eating out I have to be careful with the bread and what type of bread can effect my blood sugar levels. I really do not eat out that often but when I do I know that I have to be careful in what I eat or pay the price the next day. What kind of bread did you have for your sub?

It was wheat bread. My choice was between white or wheat -- I try to stick with pumpernickel or rye when I have a choice to watch the blood sugar.

Before discovering this diet I use to think that whole wheat was good for me and yet would wonder why I felt bad afterwards now I know thanks to Dr. Neal Barnard. Try drinking plenty of water to help flush your system is what usually helps me out. I hope that you feel better.

Thanks, I'll give it a try -- my eating out days are shrinking fast!

I know what you mean about eating out and where I live at there are no vegan places to eat except for one and that I have to question in how they cook and prepare the food.

It could be the yeast in the bread too, and that it was probably not 100% whole wheat.

Many of the breads (even whole wheat and other multigrain options) at restaurants contain high fructose corn syrup, so that might be a possible issue. --Deb R

I had something like that happen to me too. Last night, I went out with some friends for mexican. I ordered the veggie fajitas, whole wheat tortilla, no cheese and no sour cream. Afterwards, I was not feeling very well. I'm thinking they cooked my veggies right next to the meat and they were soaked in animal fat. I had a terrible headache too. I know that when I go out to eat, my food choices cannot be controlled. I didnt think I would get emotional about that but when it did happen, I was upset.

Or it could be the salt - many of the spice blends that are used are quite high in sodium and I know that really affects how I feel afterward. And, again, the whole wheat tortilla may have contained HFCS or more sugar than you're used to. --Deb R

Well, that may explain the headache! I guess I will drink more water today to flush out, thanks!

OMG! I've been following the kickstart pretty closely. Except Friday, I met my fiance at a bar for happy hour and ordered onion rings (didn't even consider that they probably used milk/eggs for the batter), but I had such a stomachache I thought I was going to throw up! I don't have stomach issues very often, if ever. I wasn't even craving something greasy, just saw someone else eating them and said "what the heck, I'll take a order too + a side salad". Won't do that again! I feel grrrrrreat from eating all the foods listed on the kickstart menu.

Eating out is a bit of a mine field. I think once you started eating "clean" like this and then eat something high in sodium or grease, it just makes you sick! I ordered veggie fajitas with corn tortillas on Friday and felt overly full---I'm pretty sure the sky-high sodium content was the culprit. Not sure what to do about that except drink more water and eat a smaller portion. Restaurants really do go overboard with the salt.
