Nutrition education in school- good news

My 2nd grader is learning about nutrition now at school. I saw one worksheet come home that gave me a chuckle. She had to cut and paste food items into two groups - need and don't need. She put the fish and meat picture in the don't need, so that left pie in the need column. I make my pies so healthy - vegan, fruit or veg, and about 1T brown rice syrup as a sweetener, and sometimes 1T molasses, so I can see how she thought they were ok.

Then in her reflection log (a notebook that comes home each day for communicating), she was talking about the food pyramid. I made a comment that I prefer the "power of the plate - no meat, no milk." I just saw that her teacher wrote back that she checked it out, and will talk about it next week as an option. I was really surprised, and impressed.

Wow! That is really great! (I have 3 kids - 12 and 8 that I do school with at home) I can imagine kids getting a lot of red marks on their papers for that, your lucky you have a good teacher! It's good to see the kids learning about the food pyramid and nutrition at school. I teach my children about nutrition and then let them make their choices (my 12 year old daughter has been doing this plan with me since Jan.1 - she's happy we don't make her drink milk or eat white bread any more) My mother-in-law sent me the vegetarian food pyramid - maybe something for your daughter to bring to class.

Theodore, it was just a picture of a pie, guess it could have been a potpie too.

They are going on a field trip to a grocery store next week to learn about healthy eating. I hope to tag along, as I am very curious.

Cathy,
How fortunate she is to have such an open-minded teacher! What a great time to be a kid. Very Happy

Several years ago, DS went on a field trip (Homeschool group so hubby was along too) to a local Whole Foods market. They showed the kids around the back of the store, talked about organic and conventional foods, showed the kids how to identify which is which (the produce items have different colored tags for organic/conventional). We made a point of going back to that store when we did some grocery shopping so he could point out the organic stuff and help us pick things.

My son is in college and taking a nutrition class as an elective. He said the teacher does not push one agenda over the other. She presents the information without her own viewpoint. That surprised me.

I work in Food Service here in our Schools. We have a fruit and veg program. Every day the kids get a different veg and fruit to try. They got Kale and blood red oranges today. It's a good way for the kids to try stuff they never get at home.
