Tofurkey
Posted Monday, March 8, 2010 at 8:57 AM

I got some tofurkey at the store and tried it yesterday. It was ok, but I was not crazy about it at all. Is there a "best" way to cook it?
Also, I dont know why, but I gained a little weight. Not much, but now I am thinking I dont even want meat substitutes. Does anyone else have that problem? That was really the only different thing I ate so far, but was wanting to branch out some, so I just think the weight shift was because of that.

I have never liked Tofurkey. I have been a vegan for over a year & a half. It's not so much the taste as the texture. It's like rubbery chicken. Try another brand. I like Smart Life products. But it took time for me to forget the taste of the real thing.

I've not tried the tofurky but I have used some of Gardein's fake meats and find them delicious. I don't like to eat them often but they're totally convenient because my omnivore husband likes them.

I do tend to think that eating processed foods slows down my weight loss and they are processed food.

Thank you both for your input. I will probably choose to stay away from those as well, but unfortunately I have to force myself to finish those, lol.

Tofurkey's Italian sausage was the first faux meat I tried. OK, but wouldn't buy it again. What I DID try next was outstanding!

These Mexican Chipotle sausages are wonderfully spicy and I find their texture MUCH better than Tofurkey. Found them at Safeway, but at $6.99 it was too much. They will go on sale periodically for $4.99 and then I will buy them. I've seen small packages of their products sliced like salami, but sausages are less expensive per weight. They also make small roasts, but I've never seen those. Sausages work fine because I'm only cooking for me. So I get four meals with one package. I crumble the sausage in the pan along with my veggies, and add a little extra cumin and chili powder - YUM! Next time they go on sale I'm going to try the Smoked Apple Sage.

I think the Tofurkey is rubbery also. I think the key is baking it in a liquid marinade to make it more tender.
I also don't usually care for the tofurkey slices, however...I picked up a pack of slices on Thanksgiving. Opened up the pack and wrapped it in foil with a little bit of water. When I brought it to my friend's house it only took a few minutes to heat up in the oven. The slices were so tender and delicious heated up and served with the Tofurkey gravy. And it made it so easy for me as a guest at someone else's home.
