Field Roast products

We had the apple Field Roast sausages for dinner last night. My husband is curious if anyone has tried any of the roasts? Or any ofthe other products? Would like to hear whether they were good or not.

I just replied on the Tofurkey topic, so you can see my post there. In case you haven't looked, here's the link: http://www.fieldroast.com/products.htm I've only tried the Mexican Chipotle sausages, but they are wonderful! Texture is MUCH better than Tofurkey.

I checked out the web site, the packages in the photos all say "vegetarian." Are you sure they're vegan? I hope they are, sounds very good.

They are definitely all vegan. I don't know why they use "vegetarian" on the packages. Though I guess a lot of vegan products do that. They do have the vegan V symbol too though. My husband LOVES these things--and yes, the roasts too. Omnivore guests have liked them lots too, and they're the best handy option for BBQ parties we've found. If you're into making your own seitan, sausages are pretty easy. You basically spice up the seitan dough, roll it in foil "tootsie roll" packets and steam them over boiling water. Vegan Dad's blog has some recipes, and so does the newish book Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romano.

Thanks Essie, I may have to make a trip to Whole Foods to get some of this. Could be one step closer to getting my husband vegan !!

Yes, they are, in fact the label has "vegan" right on top. You'll see it stated further down on the page. http://fieldroast.blogspot.com/search/label/vegan

I am not a big fake meat person, but Field Roast is really delicious. This product is slowly making its way East. I had them first in Seattle many years ago. Out of this world yummy.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yes, I went to the web site too and saw that they advertised as Vegetarian? Hmmmmmmmm. We had the apple sausages last night and loved them. I am not big on meat substitues either (although I do love Gimme Lean....even when I wasn't a vegetarian or vegan)but like someone else here said my husband has had a bigger struggle giving up meat and he really liked the sausages too. In fact, it is at his request that I am writing. Essie when you say you barbaque them do you meat like you would barbaque other sausages or do you barbaque the roasts also? Oh yes, my husband had a Field Roast sandwich today with some mushroom Field Roast slices. They were pretty good. I think they were rich but he said they were tasty.

Yeah, the sausages. We have taken them to nonvegan grill parties before. In fact, people like them so we take extras. They're really already cooked, so you just need to heat them through on the grill. Husband just sticks them in the microwave most of the time when he wants one. The chipotle ones can stain white plastic...you have been warned.

Would like to hear whether they were good or not. I am a big fan of the sausages and have tried all three flavors. The Italian sausage is my husband and my favorite and my kids like the apple sausages. I normally love spicy flavors, but did not care for the chipotle flavored sausages. It was too hot for my taste.

cyclingmarge wrote: Their sausages are delicious! but they are pretty pricey My Safeway's reg. price is $6.99 for the pkg. of four, but they go on sale for $4.99 every so often and that's reasonable for me because they are only a treat. I did break down the other day and spent $5.99, on sale. But, I figure one sausage mixed with my veggies makes two main dishes for me. By the time I add my salad (and don't mean just spinach and tomatoes!), maybe some couscous (with minced ginger and garlic added to the water for extra flavor) I'm plenty full! I'm going to e-mail Field Roast and see if freezing will affect the texture. I'd buy a couple pkgs. at $4.99 if I could freeze! I'm looking to try the smoked apple ones next.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but if you're concerned about the low-fat aspect of your food choices, you really have to be careful with these. Each sausage is 240 calories and 90 of the calories are from fat. We love them, too, (the smoked apple sage) but we will only add one of them chopped in thin slices to a pan full of veggies and/or grains. It adds a delightful flavor without becoming the focus of the meal and prevent us from eating too much, but still enjoying the flavor.

While I'd love to post a link, my computer has some issues, and pdf files will not display. Here's the nutritional info for the chipotle sausages copied from their label: Serving size = 1 sausage Calories per serving = 250 calories Calories from fat - 100 Total fat = 12g - 18% Saturated fat = 1g - 5% Trans fat = 0g - 0% Choloesterol = 0% Sodium = 520mg - 22% Total carb = 12g - 4% Dietary fiber = 4g - 16% Sugars = 8g PROTEIN =23g Vit. A - 0% Calcuim = 2% Vit. C = 0% Iron = 10% Percent Daily Values (DV) are based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Yes, the fat and sodium are a bit high, so I only use these sausages for treats now and then. BUT, look at the PROTEIN each sausage affords - 23g! This, added to veggies, beans, maybe tofu, makes a great flavor-burst meal every now and then, and one sausage combined with my usual veggie/bean mix (plus added cumin, chili powder, and oregano) make it a special meal - and I break my fixings into two portions. Can you tell I love spicier foods?!

WOW, I try to keep my fat grams a lot lower than that, like you said, an occassional treat! Plus, if my husband likes them it is still better than the real meat alternative. I don't think he has had sausage in the 8 years we've been married! He'll think he's been a very good boy!! HA! Thanks for the info, I don't get to Whole Foods often since my nearest one is in Orlando, but I am going to plan a trip and check these out. Are they in the freezer or refrigerator section?

Very good point. I rarely eat them now (following ETL) but when I do use them, it's usually splitting 1 between us, in a tofu scramble or other dish with veggies. Or as something to take to a BBQ--because I can't stand the soy dogs, never having liked regular hot dogs (grossssssssssss).
