How is everyone going?
Posted Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 10:47 PM
How are you all? Is everyone managing to stick to the low-fat vegan foods or having little break outs or have stopped eating vegan? I felt like something sweet as a treat today. I walked into a bakery that was close to where I was, looked at all the food, cakes, slices and particularly donuts with fresh cream. They looked good! I remembered I used to like these - but I just couldn't bring myself to buy one and eat it. I knew I would be letting myself down. However, if they had a vegan cookie available, I would have bought that as my treat.

Vegan bakeries are few and far between here but I did discover this little gem at the book signing I went to last weekend www.sproutveganbakery.com. This young businesswoman had some delectable samples available for tasting. Her cupcakes were FABULOUS.

For those who live in the Sacramento, Ca area there's the Sugar Plum Vegan Cafe which I keep hearing good things about: http://www.sugarplumvegan.com/

Anyone in the Orlando area must try Ethos Vegan Kitchen. My omnivore hubby even likes it. Plus they always have a variety of vegan cookies and occasionally other baked goods. There's also a vegan cupcake cookbook. It's called "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World." I'm not a big sweets person so I haven't tried it, but I know some that swear by the recipes in it.

Hey Kiwi, Glad you asked! I had strayed from the low-fat path for quite a while, and my waistline was showing it! But some recent health problems are forcing me to get back on the beam and start eating low-fat again. Though my tastebuds are whining about it, in all honesty it is a relief. I know that low-fat is the healthiest way to be, and I'm happy about that. As far as vegan, yes, I've strayed some. Mostly because of stupid desserts. Wanting to have junk food - sweets and treats that "other people get to enjoy" - and not having those options available as a vegan. There are not really options of low-calorie, low-fat, sugar-free, vegan, dessert foods... that is, except for fruit – and I don't always want fruit! So, I cheat, and then I feel guilty. It's a vicious cycle. But I'm being honest, at least. I'm glad you guys are here that I can be honest with. My new healthy eating plan is basically as low-fat as possible, as low-sugar as possible, and as vegan as possible, given any particular situation. God willing, I'll end up totally vegan again.

Hi MollyHorn, It's not easy at times. Good luck getting back on the lowfat path. The secret ingredient that I notice the most is milk (dairy). I am still amazed at how many products milk or whey is in. For example there is a brand of bread here that has a lovely range of grain breads, looks healthy if you dont read the labels, but milk is in every one. There is thankfully another brand that is completely vegan regardless of whether wholemeal, white, grain or which variety of that brand you purchase. Being vegan does help my willpower and gives me a mental excuse to stop me from picking at the cakes and food we sometimes get at work. Most have eggs and milk and I lacked willpower (or should I say won't power) in the past. If it was in front of me I ate it. One person did bring in a homemade vegan cake that was lovely and simple. Not a lot of ingredients. I will hunt out the recipe and post. A friend put me onto a website where you can track what you eat daily and if you enter a recipe it will tell you the nutritionl values (how many calories etc.) It's free although you have to 'join' and log in with a password and kind of fun. You can also track your exercise. The features are great but ignore the adds, thats how they pay for the site. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/logout

I'm still eating vegan and I feel like I'll be sticking with it. I've been eating LOTS of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and learning all kinds of new recipes. I know nuts aren't recommended, but I do enjoy them sometimes and I never have more than an ounce. Other than that I keep fats and oils to a minimum. I also keep homemade vegan black bean brownies in the freezer so I can have an occasional treat. Another great vegan treat that I enjoy is a frozen banana with almond milk and cocoa powder mixed up in a blender. It makes a great ice-cream like treat with none of the guilt. Enjoying those treats on occasion has kept me from craving non-vegan treats. I was starting to discover all kinds of great vegan products like vegan cheese, field roast sausage, etc. But timing is everything in life and I came across this blog about vegan junk food: http://veganhope.com/2011/02/08/say-goodbye-to-vegan-junk-food/
It was a great and very timely reminder that the point is to eat a HEALTHY vegan diet.

In case anyone else is having problems if you scroll down the articles you find the one you mentioned plus a follow up to the first post where she talks about 3 types of vegans and the responses she received to the first junk-food post. The response is equally worth reading. http://veganhope.com/?s=vegan+junk+food

Mostly vegan, occasionally edging into the vegetarian range if I need food and that's all there is available - like Saturday at a family picnic, skipped all the meats on the grill, skipped the pasta salad with tuna (that was easy, it also had hard boiled egg and I know that egg like that does nasty things to my innards - and it was a 45 minute drive home which could've turned ugly). Ate some of the hummus and crackers we brought, ate a big plate of the tossed veggie full salad we brought. Did use a sprinkle of Italian dressing (so it had fat galore but I did with as little as I could get to sprinkle). But, I still needed some food, so I had about a tablespoon or two of homemade dill potato salad - quite tasty but used mayo so it had fat and egg (oddly, egg that is cooked into something like a cookie or processed like mayo doesn't have the same reaction in my innards). Then I had a couple of oatmeal cookies my SIL made. All this over the course of about 4 hours. However, the good news is that not only am I still slowly losing weight (dr. said I was down 6 lbs since my last visit 3 months ago) but the last 4 days my morning fasting glucose was under 110!! One day, it's just a fluke and that's happened at random if I sleep in or something, but FOUR days in a row is a trend! I've always (since I was diagnosed 5-6 years ago) had a problem with the dawn syndrome - I could control my daytime glucose readings by adjusting food intake, portions, timing, exercise, but that first thing in the morning thing was always a problem. Looks like the weight loss and low fat eating (most of the time) is finally getting in gear and bringing those levels down. --Deb R

Nothing like seeing the results to motivate us to continue. Interesting about eggs. I have never been able to eat eggs on their own no matter how ccoked (hard boiled, poached, fried, omlet). It upsets my stomach and I often end up vomiting - so learned to leave them alone long before becoming vegan. Like you though, I can eat them in cooked products if I want to. Must be something about them already being broken down. I have lost 4-5 pound since the end of the kickfast. Coming off slow at a rate of 1 lb a week but coming off is better than going on so although I would like to to be faster I am trying to not be impatient.

I used to be able to eat eggs, loved omelettes, made a mean quiche lorraine, etc. But then when DS was nursing, he'd get gassy and unhappy if I ate eggs like that. So, I stopped - figured I could manage for a year or so without omelettes and then go back. Boy was I wrong! It was really nasty ungly, spent the day on the john pretty much. Oddly enough, DS was an egg lover when he was littler. Now, at 13, he rarely eats eggs but he used to eat 2 or 3 eggs scrambled with cheese as a snack when he was going through some of his earlier growth spurts (before we were vegan). Then, a couple of years ago, he just stopped eating eggs like that (even before vegan) - though baked into things is fine, sometimes, but he's okay with vegan baking as well (we've even figured out the tweaks necessary for the 5 minute chocolate mug cake that he can make himself so it can be made sans eggs). Similarly, he was a tuna lover (he could open a can and make himself food which was a big thing, that do-it-myself part). But, once we got a good substitute (chickpea salad - not hummus - the chickpeas are cooked and chopped coarsely instead of smooth, then diced onion, celery, carrot, mustard and mayo-like substance is added - sometimes regular mayo, sometimes homemade beanaise. Tastes somewhere between tuna salad and egg salad) he's fine with not having tuna in the house. Ditto for mac'n'cheese and nachos made with not-cheese sauce. As long as we've got a good alternative (taste, texture, etc) he's fine with vegan foods...at 13 yrs old! Odd kid, really, gets excited over chickpea quinoa pilaf with braised/sauteed leafy greens (kale, chard, spinach, whatever) --Deb R

I am doing well. 5 months completely vegan. Wasn't easy getting together with friends and family over the holiday weekend but I managed to bring my own food or visit with them after lunch. I am still eating low fat and wouldn't even consider the cake on the other post because of the 1/2 cup oil. I will stick with the bowl of oatmeal I just had with a sprinkle of agave syrup and cinnamon mixed in. Several weeks ago I made the chocolate cupcakes from www.delectableplanet.com and they were so very good that I started eating the icing in the bowl! so I had about 3 of them and then threw everything out: icing, and iced cupcakes and I will just forget about cupcakes for now because they are too good and I can't just eat one or 2. That icing was so good! I am eating a baked potato sprinkled with nutritional yeast flakes every day lately. Its very filling. I am still focusing on the delicious taste of the foods that I can have, and not the ones I can't. On Saturday I am going to a social function and they are going to have free hot dogs for lunch. There is no way I am eating one. No way! The thought of kale perks me up. I remember the days when I was afraid to try it and now I associate happy thoughts with it! Thanks to this wonderful Kickstart and all the great forum members.

Veganer, I know just what you mean. The sugary treats are addictive. Back at Valentine's, I tried making healthy, vegan brownies for my boyfriend's kids. I ended up eating half of them before they made it out the door. Lesson learned that I can't have certain foods in the house – I just can't be around them. I want to get back to low-fat eating, and I know I can. I feel so much better when I do. I'm already working on it, and already feeling the benefits – just in less than a week! My digestion is thanking me.

Hi all, It's great to see so many people sticking with it and doing so well too. I'm hanging in there. I've had a few set backs with a pot luck and a raging sweet tooth lately. I also had a pity party and ate ice cream. I'm committed eating vegan, so although I've slipped with a few unhealthy choices, I'm continuing on. My biggest hurdle is...I get frustrated when I don't see any weight loss. That's when I get caught up in the, "what's the use" mentality . Okay, enough with my whining! Have a great day, all! Laura

My mind plays tricks on me if I let it and I have to reconfirm to myself on a regular basis why I am choosing to eat this way. That it's about health overall not just my weight. My aunt visited 2 days ago and told me I've put on the weight. Same thing she said when I last saw her 3-4 months ago. Like I dont know that already! Actually I am 5 lbs lighter than the last time she saw me but its not enough to notice yet. Big challenge today was cakes at work. I walked into the lunch room and there they were. The chocolate slice I loved in my pre-vegan days was there. It was just before lunch time and harder to resist temptation on an almost empty stomach. I left the room so I wouldnt be tempted. Then I ate my healthy lunch. I won this round but it is a day by day thing for me. Still the longer I do this the easier it becomes,

I won this round but it is a day by day thing for me. Still the longer I do this the easier it becomes, I walked into the kitchen area yesterday morning (to toast my homemade whole wheat and rye mini sandwich roll to which I added some all-fruit type raspberry jam - which the company I work for provides for free). And there, on the table, were two "leftovers" from someone's weekend festivities: a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and a bit of fruit salad (melons, pineapple, grapes, blueberries, strawberries) I *Love* cream cheese frosting - the tang of it is so much nicer than the ubersweet typical frostings. I put my toasted roll and jam on a paper towel to carry back to my desk and filled the small container I transported it from home in with...fruit salad! By the time I happened by the kitchen again later in the day, both the fruit salad and cake were long gone. I did it!--Deb R

One thing I've noticed about weight loss and weight gain is that people don't always know if you've gained or lost, they just know you look different. It's similar to when someone has gotten a new haircut or new pair of glasses – others will say "there's something different about you," but not know what that different thing is. It may be that you are losing weight, and your body changes are being noticed by people, but they are mistakenly thinking you've gained rather than lost! Also, for those of us who've spent years overweight and who may have low self-esteem, it's important to remember that our 'looker' may be broken. The image we see in the mirror may not be 100% real. For myself, I have to remember that I am more that just a fat stomach. I am a whole woman, and I am more valuable than just the excess weight that I carry on one part of my frame.

One thing I've noticed recently is that you can get a much lower reading if you stand on the front edge of the scales. This is one piece of advice that I didn't see in Dr Barnard's Kickstart book. Perhaps I should write a book.
