What are other names for milk ingredients?
Posted Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 9:02 AM

I have never been a cook, so I am using several vegan convenience foods in my diet. I look for any ingredient that may be a milk ingredient. Does anyone have a list of ingredients to watch out for? (i.e. whey, etc.)

Also, yesterday at Trader Joes I passed by many sauces because they were made using the same machinery as some milk products. Should I continue to avoid those?

Thanks to anyone who can help me with this!

Casien is one. It is found in many vegetarian cheeses.

casein can also be known as sodium caseinate (sp?) and is a milk derivative.

i will buy things that say "was used on machinery (or in a plant) that also processes milk product

thats mainly for allergy purposes. i feel like if i avoid those too there will be nothing for me to eat.

totally up to you thought

I do the same as Lisa. As long as the actual product does not contain meat or dairy. I feel it's the same way at home. My pots, pans, etc. were once used on meat but I'm not going to get rid of them.

Same here. Those warnings are only there to protect the company in the event that someone has an allergic reaction. I only concentrate on the actual ingredients in the product.

Lactose and whey are two others to watch for. I don't stress about the "made on machinery" issue right now. I don't have allergies and I want to make this doable. The thing I have to watch out for is any processed vegetarian foods. I have to read labels carefully for any milk or eggs in the fine print.

Also look out for the word "whey"
