Blending fruit, seeds and all?
Posted Monday, January 18, 2010 at 5:26 PM

I'm thinking of buying a Vitamix blender (despite the $$$$ouch!) and have been looking over their website (http://www.vitamix.com). Somwewhere - I can't find it again for the moment - they state that you don't even have to de-core an apple, that you can blend it seeds and all. The same for avocado pips. Why you would want to eat avocado pips (even blended) I'm not sure, but with regard to apple seeds, I thought they contained toxins. Can anyone confirm this please? Are these statements little more than marketing spin?

Is anyone aware of the types of fruits that it's okay to blend with their seeds, and those that are not? From a convenience point of view it would be great to not have to remove seeds before blending, but from a taste/toxicity point of view this may not always be well advised. I just don't know. Can anyone help please?

I have a VitaMix, I don't blend the seeds. Definitely have no desire to eat an avocado pit. It is VERY powerful and I have no doubt you would never know the seeds were there. I've never heard that apple seeds are toxic, would love to know if that's true.

I love my Vita-mIx- use it all the time. I don't think you'll regret the purchase. However, I always core pits out of fruit before blending it.

Apples, pears and other fruits contain cyanide/cyanide compounds in their seeds. Googling leaves a person wondering about the dangers, but why risk it? It seems no one knows how much cyanide is okay to ingest, how the body metabolizes it, etc. (Guess they have trouble finding test subjects!!) It literally takes 2 seconds to scoop 'em outta there with a melon baller.

I have had my vitamix for 13 years and use it almost daily. I suggest getting the dry container too as you can use it for grinding grains, spices, coffee, and making bread dough starting with an unprocessed grain to putting it directly intoa baking pan!

I too have heard you can grind the avocado pit, supposedly has good nutrients. However i take out apple seeds but grind citrus seeds.

If you truly want an appliance that you will never regret, get a vitamix. I love making smoothies, apple sauce, sorbets, sauces, soups, dressings, hummus, dips, all kinds of great recipes. Some people get an extra container to grind up their table scraps so that composting goes faster.

Never had to replace a thing on the vitamix. My only complaint is that it is difficult to do small batches of things as larger batches process better, but i think they have a small container now you can get. Clean up is super easy too compared to a regular blender or food processor.

Apple seeds contain amygdalin that metabolizes to hydrogen cyanide, I would definitely take out the core with the seeds. There is now a competitor for Vitamix in the market which is fully electronic. I like my Vitamix but would evaluate their competition when I am ready for another one.

I read the info on the site too. I believe they were merely demonstrating how powerful it's product is. Kind of bad/good examples they used.

My friend has a vitamix and laughs that she could probably throw her old car parts in and the thing wouldn't break. haha

I have told people I could make a smoothie out of nuts and bolts. Would make a horrible racket, but I bet it would do it!! I LOVE my VitaMix, I only regret that I waited so long to get it.

I love mine too. Use it more than any other appliance.

I do core the apples--though I rarely blend apples for some reason. But for lemons, oranges, limes etc. it just obliterates the seeds. The pith and seeds have extra nutrients and flavor. Lovely.

Not sure why anyone would blend an avocado pit, but I don't doubt the VitaMix could do it!

On their website and also on eBay you can find "refurbished" models for a significant discount, and they still have the same warranties as new. They use them in a trade-show demo and put them back in the box. That's how I got mine. Smile

I have a blender and a KitchenAid mixer with all the parts. I don't have a food processor. I'm wondering which would be the better investment: a Vitamix or a food processor?

I have used my VitaMix more in the 7 months I have owned it than the food processor that I have had for - I don't even know how many years, at least 12 !

Yeah, same here. Anything a food processor can do can either be done by hand or in the blender. But the VitaMix can make perfectly smooth cremes out of anything, smoothies with no chunks, fiber-rich veggie and fruit drinks, frozen fruit treats, and even hot soups warmed by the blending friction.

Depends on how you cook I guess.

It depends what you want to do with the appliances. If you can get a low cost processor and add it to your repetoire, you may find it works for you. But a food processor cannot use a bunch of fresh veggies and some spices and make hot soup in 2 mins! Yes, hot out of the vitamix!

I guess it is a matter of preference, but the vitamix is soooo much easier to clean and use. I never use my processor (which i was given) bc it is a pain to yse and clean.

Avocado seeds? My, I'd never heard that one!

Just jumping in to add to the list of happy Vitamixers. And mine is the old original 3600, without fancy attachments and it's a real workhorse.

However, I like others here leave out the seeds and core, unless of course it's berries!

Thanks folks. I think I'll go with my instincts and remove seeds before I blend (in my not-yet-ordered Vitamix) except perhaps citrus. A Vitamix certainly sounds like the way to go. I especially like that one can add greens to the blend (eg kale) and not even be aware that it's there.

Richard,if $$ is a concern you might be able to score a VM bottom dollar on someplace like ebay. Really, those old models are reliable! I actually inherited mine and have had only one replacement issue: the blade finally popped out of its housing BUT I was able to get a replacement from VM and she's as good as new.

I was wondering about a vitamixer too. I know everyone really likes theirs but Montel Williams (who used to be a spokeperson for vitamixer) has one seemingly the same for $2o0 or $250 which I think is like half the vitamixers cost. It has a lifetime warranty and he modeled it on the vitamixer with more horsepower so I am still deciding. It can do the soups, creamy things etc
