Trying to quit coffee. Any suggestions?
Posted Monday, January 18, 2010 at 6:43 PM

Evening,

As a pre diabetic, and since I am trying to go the way of a Vegan, I know the cream isn't the best in the ground coffee. My problem is that I have been grinding my coffee beans and drinking a couple of cups for years, so it is a part of my routine. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas on what to drink as a replacement? I am thinking I must enjoy the hot Green Tea and Agava Nectar, but it doesn't have the pick me up that I am looking for in those early morning few minutes. I am trying to quit all animal products and this half and half in my coffee is my last thing to give up. I have tried the coconut milk, tried the SILK French Vanilla, and tried the Almond Milk --nothing works. I have always ground my coffee beans up fresh and used a french press and so I guess it's just a habit, but drinking it black, doesn't seem to work either after years of it with cream and some sweetener. I have been reading a book by Dr. McDougall, and he says coffee can be a problem for those suffering with stomach issues. I am about to just quit drinking it, but before I did, I thought I would ask, if anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

EJ

Try the grain-based coffee-like beverages. I think Postum went out of business, so I'd suggest trying Pero, or just drinking decaf. http://www.enjoybettercoffee.com/PERO-Coffee-s/111.htm?Click=8096&gclid=CKyT_uuQr58CFQcQagodqF3y0w

I had to give it up completely. The acid in the coffee is terrible as is too much caffeine. It has been very difficult.
I try to drink organic decaf green tea, but you are right it is just not the same.
If I had to weigh how I feel after drinking too much coffee and how I feel after not having any, I would take not having any.
Best wishes to you. This is a tough one.

I love Dr. McDougall's work. The best is to go cold turkey. So far this is starting my kickstart week No.2 and have not drank coffee and I like my coffee Puerto Rican style very strong and sweet.

It seems like you have tolerated coffee well for a number of years. There are problems with coffee but I think you need to weigh against other more important issues you are facing. As a prediabetic I would focus on minimizing the fats in your diet which does include the additives to the coffee. I would continue to experiment with the vegan alternatives as you have been doing and try to add a little agave. Once you have found an acceptable alternative work on lessening the added fats over time. If you want to try the "cold turkey" route it may take several weeks for your taste for coffee and dependency on caffeine to change enough so that you enjoy an alternative like green or black tea or a good smoothie. Which ever way you go... taper, substitute or cold turkey if you keep at it you will find your own acceptable path. Good luck and be well.

Thanks Serene for the link to better coffee.

Tessking2010.

It sounds like you saw the benefits straight away after giving it up. Great! I felt better after 1 day of the Vegan way, so I think I know what you mean. May I ask: Is there any way, you can describe how you felt better? I imagine you just felt better overall. I have been trying the taper off route and that doesn't seem to work, so just today I gave it up and I will hope that
I will feel better soon and not want to go.

Veganwant2be,

Yes, I am enjoying Dr. McDougall's work, too. What is your favorite book of his? Mine is the only one I have read and it's Digestion Tune
Up. In that book, he talks about the inflammation that coffee brings from the acids and I am having some stomach issues.

Dr.Dons,

Thanks for your response, and I didn't realize coffee had
additives that are fats. I do see the fats swimming
around in the coffee, and should have realized that.

I say this with a smile, but that fact alone should be enough
for me to quit drinking it.

Uniquebuys, I know what you mean about the coffee habit. I've enjoyed two mugs every morning, with cream, for many years. Sunday mornings mean coffee and the fat paper.
I started cutting back on the cream, until really only using a dot. Then I cut back to one good mug of organic coffee, but I'm still hangin' on to that drop of cream or half and half. I'd rather go black than use anything else, so that's the last step. I swore I wouldn't buy it again. Almost out and getting a little nervous, but I know it's the next right step for me.
Good luck to you and know you're not alone!

Dr. Don,

You were mentioning that as a prediabetic I need to focus on minimizing the fats in my diet which does include the additives to the coffee. I agree with you and have a question about the additives in coffee. I tried researching it, but didn't come up with the true list of additives. Can you tell me more about the additives that are linked with coffee?

Uniquebuys:

I read and enjoyed McDougalls 12 days to dynamite health (I beleive that is the title) and have Digestive Tune up but have not read it. I also have their cookbook. Also I liked to go to his website and read. He came to Florida and saw him in person at a health convention.

Although I quit drinking coffee 35 years ago (black with an ice cube in it to cool it down), I still like to have a cup of something warm and dark for breakfast every now and then. I have found that "Roastaroma" by Celestial Seasonings is a nice substitute. It's caffeine free but as a roasted chicory based herbal tea it still has some of coffee's similarities. When it first came out back in the 70's all the grocery stores carried it, now I can only find at well stocked health food stores - currently I'm buying it at Whole Foods.

Coffee addiction like sugar addiction is just one of those things you have to struggle through and then it's over. Perhaps Roastaroma would help.

I just joined this site today and i saw your post on trying to stop drinking coffee. I have not had coffee in 4 weeks. I replaced them with fresh fruit smoothies in the morning. I don't even have a taste for coffee any more. I tried to at least have it on the weekends but i crave my fruit smoothies now. I commute over 2 hrs to work in the morning so i brought the magic bullet off of tv and it is perfect for the smoothies. I purchase fruit on the weekends and brought pinapple juice and soy milk (makes it thick) and soy yogurt(don't like it unless it;s in the smoothie). I just experiement and put diff fruit in see how it taste. I have never drank milk so i'm trying to get use to soy milk but don't really care for it in the smoothies unless i add juice. my favorite has become pinapple and bananna or strawberry bananna and mango. just mix it up (what ever is on sale!) I pour it into the travel cup that comes in the magic bullet and walla! it helped me stop drinking coffee and gives me energy. A few people at work are wanting to try this method. I got the cheap magic bullet not the new version with the blender. the small one for 20.00 works great. I put all my fruit and yogurt in the container at night and blend it once i get up, it only takes 1 min and i'm out the door at 6:30 am. Good luck! I never thought i would stop drinking coffee but i just tried it and it worked.

Smoothies are great in the morning. Soy is good stuff but if you don't like it or don't tolerate it well, you can go with other plant based milks such as Almond or Rice... use the unsweetened variety to cut down on sugar. The rice milk has no fats. My wife and I have also found it great to put vegetables(carrots, green leafies, peppers, etc.) and spices(cinnamon, cloves, etc.) in our smoothies in addition to fruits to add variety and increase the antioxidant content. Congratulations and welcome to having a greater variety of tastes to start the day. Be well.

There is a great product, called GANO CAFFE, which is made of Ganoderma Lucidum (Red Mushroom). It's a Chinese herb, gives you that coffee taste with lots of extra benefits. As far as I know, it does not contain coffee beans.
