Eating out
Posted Monday, January 18, 2010 at 6:45 PM

For my son's birthday, he requested to go to Red Lobster for dinner. I was dreading it (for many reasons) but mostly because I knew they had no vegan choices there.
However, I made it through by eating a plain baked potato with lemon, salt and pepper and an order of asparagus (not cooked in any butter).

I am totally satisfied by the dinner and energized that there is no place we cannot go and find a choice - at least for today.

Thanks for reading.

Congrats on turning a tough situation into a win! Somtimes it's easier than we anticipate, sometimes it's tougher than we'd like. You walked away a winner!! Woo Hoo !

Good job. Last week I learned the hard way that I have to ask for the veggies to be cooked without butter.

Funny coincidence. I was invited to Red Lobster last weekend by friends. I called ahead and talked with the manager. She was very friendly and was going to check on the marinara sauce to make sure it didn't have broth (her idea). She offered to make breadsticks without cheese just for me.

Then we didn't go. My friends have a gift certificate and are talking about doing it this weekend. I'll call her back to check on the marinara just in case she isn't there when I go in...if I go in!

Does red lobster have salads? Almost anywhere I go I can always get a salad or veggies of some sort. You can usually get bread with a small dish of olive oil and herbs.

I had a great experience at California Pizza Kitchen. They have a Thai Linguine that I love, but I knew I wouldn't be able to have it because I knew that there is cream in the sauce. I asked about it and the manager came to my table. She told me that the sauce also has clam juice, or something like that, in it. She suggested that I just get the pasta without the cream sauce and they'd put a little bit of sesame oil on the pasta instead. Well, I tried it and it was great. I was just so happy that they were so willing to work with me.

Yes, depending on the restaurant, the server, the manager, most places can be accommodating to a vegan diet. Make it known to places that don't that many people would appreciate and support businesses with vegan options.

Or better yet, you can suggest to friends and family places to go that you have options (and obviously they do too.) visit the PCRM Restaurant and Eating Out Guides:

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I went with some friends to a little independently-owned restaurant near where we live. The restaurant used to have a great vegetarian sampler platter on the menu, but the last time we went they'd changed the menu and the platter was no longer on it. They had an eggplant dish and a mushroom dish instead. Well, I'm allergic to eggplant and I hate mushrooms, so I asked our server if the chef could make me a simple pasta dish with a marinara sauce, no cheese, or an olive oil sauce. The server gave me a nasty attitude and acted as though I'd asked him to sacrifice his first-born. The chef did make a pasta dish for me, but the server's attitude totally soured us on the whole evening and the restaurant. Usually, I check a restaurant's menu on-line or call the restaurant to be sure that there's something I can eat. I didn't before we went to this restaurant because I wasn't expecting the menu to have changed. We'd just been there about 3 weeks before this last time. Needless to say, we will not go there again because of the server's attitude and because in my opinion, it's such a cliche to have an eggplant dish and a mushroom dish on the menu for vegetarians. I like restaurants that are more creative.

Sounds like the server had a personal problem. Maybe they had a computer system that made typing in special orders a big pain (but she still shouldn't have shown her annoyance to a customer).

I have found that several restaurants have an off-menu item that you wouldn't know about unless you asked and many will still serve items no longer on the menu and some won't. Sometimes those meals turn out to be so good, it's bizarre that they're not a regular menu item.

My favorite restaurant took their vegetable plate off the menu a few years ago and they've even improved on the dish in that time. (Why improve a dish you don't advertise? I don't know but they did.) If you're ever in Houston, go to America's and ask for it. I don't know if the veggie empanadas that come on it are vegan, and just in case they aren't, I don't want to know!
