Popcorn ?
Posted Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 2:28 PM

I make the hot air popcorn and have tried adding nutritional yeast as well as other things, none of them stick to the popcorn, they just collect at the bottom of the bowl.
The only thing that sticks is soy sauce or salsa but then I eat too much.
Any suggestions of getting dry ingredients to stick,
Thanks,

spritz with water (a spray bottle so it's a fine mist).

Good idea! I'm going to try that next time. I've just been melting a teaspoon or so of vegan margarine and using that. I don't have a hot air popper though so this is what I do:

Just put 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels in a paper lunch bag, fold it over a couple of times and microwave it for 2-3 minutes. Then, open the bag, pour the melted margarine in, and shake it up along with any seasonings you want and eat!

I'm definitely going to try the water next time, though. Cool

Someone suggested getting a spray bottle of Bragg Liquid Aminos and using it to wet the popped kernels for yeast, etc. I tried it, and it works!

The melted margarine will get toppings to stick but it's not low fat. Which is fine if that's pretty much all the fat in your day but not so great for the rest of us folks. A spritz of water or Bragg's doesn't add fat to the process.

Oh I forgot! Sometimes, I make (sort of) "salt and vinegar" popcorn - spritz either white vinegar or, if I have it, malted vinegar on the popcorn and then add a little salt. I don't use salt usually, but for this I do. Of course, you have to like things with salt and vinegar on them for this to work. Very Happy

Edit: Oh, and Deb, I realize it's not really "on plan" to use the margarine but I only eat popcorn once or twice a week, at the most, so for me, it's fine. Wink I'm also really careful to only use enough to get the seasonings to stick.

ooh I like salt'n'vinegar chips so that sounds yummy! Could also maybe use vinegar and garlic powder (not garlic salt) to get flavor without salt if salt is being avoided. Vinegar and chili powder might be a bit strong, what do you think? One of our favs is a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on popcorn (but that would rule out vinegar pretty much Wink )

Yeah, I think vinegar and chili powder might be too strong. One of my other favorite things to put on my popcorn is garam masala. Have to try that with your water trick, Deb. Smile

Edit: Or maybe balsamic vinegar and Italian seasoning. I want popcorn now... Laughing

Ooh - we've got some garam masala, haven't really used it yet. We've got a lentil/brown rice recipe that we're thinking of adding it to. Popcorn would work well.

Hubby is on the way to being a Pampered Chef consultant and their newest is a microwave chip maker - potato, sweet potato, etc. Slice thin and pop in the microwave, no oil or other added fat, quicker than oven baking. I'd bet they would be good with the garam masala.

salt and vinegar is a brilliant idea! I wonder if adding the nutritional yeast to that would be any good? Gonna try tonight!

One thing I LOVE on popcorn that has zero fat, plenty of flavor, and allows other seasonings to stick is garlic juice! Garlic Valley Farms has both raw garlic juice and roasted garlic juice in a spray bottle...no fat! My grocery store here carries it in the produce section; you might need to order it online. It really tastes just like liquid garlic...because it is! As garlic is...it is a little bit sticky...so seasonings stick to it. I actually use the sprays on quite a lot of dishes, when I want just a hint of "fresh" garlic flavor without the fuss of getting my hands sticky from peeling the fresh stuff!

I've often thought they should have travel-size containers and a little carrying case... Laughing

Love the vinegar suggestion! Used to really enjoy salt and vinegar chips. Will have to give that a try!

Thanks everyone for all the ideas, wow,
popcorn is my snack for today - the hard part now is deciding which of these toppings to use.

Try spraying a little Pam on the popcorn before sprinkling salt.
