Do I need more calories?
Posted Monday, April 11, 2011 at 4:08 PM

I'm 5'8 weigh 130 lbs I don't need to loose weight. I'm doing this for health reason. Should I be adding more daily? If so what? I've been feeling light headed and weak. I asked on Facebook but no one has answered.

awww... maybe...what are you eating? how much?
are you always hungry? never hungry? eat all the time? only at breakfast, lunch & dinner? skip any meals? eat vegan junk food? take any supplaments? are you on any meds that would make you feel weak?

sorry need more information to even make a guess.

Eat if you're hungry! Stop when you feel full. There are no "portion sizes" specified in the kickstart. If you eat and then an hour later you get hungry again, eat some more. It's that simple.

Sorry. I'm following the daily menu with very few changes. I don't eat all the time no junk and am taking B12 and calcium with D and Magnesium. No on the meds

Hey PennyC,

Without more specifics, it sounds like eating more may well be the problem as others suggest. With the light-headedness.

Many people are amazed at how much you can - and need to - eat when you switch to a whole foods plant based diet. It's a lot!

And making the switch can be daunting at first. With my clients I am constantly, especially in the early stages, needing to give them samples of my daily eats to reassure them that a LOT is OK! Yes, I eat a couple of cups of rice at a time, not 1/2 cup as the standard diet 'serving' recommends, and many women find that scary.

Keep us posted!

Not just women - it can be 'scary' as a diabetic to have someone say Go ahead - eat rice, eat oatmeal, eat pasta (even if it's brown rice and whole grain pasta). But, as long as there's no "stuffing" going on (eating beyond fullness, satisfaction, need), it really does work out. As with anything, each person's individual needs/best choices will vary.

Yeah, had to get that in there even though it wasn't specifically mentioned in the original message. I know it was hard when I did the September kickstart to tell myself it was okay to have oatmeal for breakfast. I took it slowly and kept careful watch on my glucose levels to see what stuff worked and what needed adjusting still.

I for one am amazed. I'm eating more now than I ever have. I feel like all I do is eat and cook. But I do feel like I'm one that needs alot of protein I'm wondering if that is my problem. It's only been a week and to tell you the truth I'm sick of beans and I hate tofu any suggestions?

RE: Do I need more calories?

Penny.. for most of my life i thought tofu was worse than buggers, nasty stuff and i avoided it. BUT the only way i had it was in chinese hot and sour soup. YUCK.
since i have used it in different recipes i really LIKE it a LOT...
tofu doesn't taste like anything. It takes the flavor of the food you cook it with. It tastes different in sauces, it tastes different in soups, it tastes different fried, it tastes different in small chunks or big chunks.
different brands of tofu taste similar but different. You might try a different recipe.

As far as beans.. gosh there are so many of them and so many different things you can do. Is there any way you like them? burritos? chili? in a salad? I love chickpeas on a salad.... but wouldn't really care for red beans on a salad. You might look around and see if some recipes look better than others and try the ones you think sound good.

You could always go for the conversion foods...those soy meat crumbles, gimme lean soy sausage, amys pizza and amy's burritos. how about hummus? the pcrm recipe is good, easy & quick.

Just give yourself some more time.. it's 21 days for a reason. chin up..it will be worth it.

Penny, don't worry you'll get the hang of it. I always tell people I hate to cook but I LOVE to eat, so I've figured out ways to prep in quantities and use things in cans and packages (such as veggies) too.

What is it that leads you to believe you are 'one of those people' who needs lots of protein? How does that show up for you?

I dunno I just feel better eating a protein instead of carbs. It seems to stick with me longer.

Are you filling up the spaces with fruit and veggies? For example, toss a big mixed veg salad to have alongside your protein (whatever that is - beans, lentils, etc - and keep in mind that whole grains also have protein). Make bean salads instead of warm bean dishes; add lentils or beans to rice and pasta dishes; etc.

Re Tofu: If you freeze and then thaw your tofu, it will change it to a more "meaty" texture and you can brown it better, which gives it a nice flavor.

Penny C,

Oh! I see. How often are you eating? You just may need to do it more often! Eating low fat, high fiber usually has a quicker turnaround time because your digestion isn't bogged down with the challenges of high fat and high protein. Perhaps a shift to more frequent meals is all you need.

I probably eat 5 - 6 times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. The beauty of the whole-foods/plant-based plan is that you have the freedom of appetite being your guide.

It sounds like you are just about my size; same height, and you are a few pounds lighter than me.

Hope this helps!

I'm nowhere near Lani's size, I do need to lose weight, BUT I still eat 5-7 times per day. I have cereal or oatmeal for breakfast, mid morning piece of fruit, lunch (often leftovers from prior dinner), mid afternoon piece of fruit, dinner and then maybe an evening snack depending on how my glucose levels are going. Sometimes, instead of fruit, I'll have multigrain crackers and hummus or some other smallish snack.

Hello Everyone,

What kind of cereal do you guys buy, I wanted to get Rasin Bran, but it contained to much sugar. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lovie

I usually go with basic Cheerios because, even though it's not high in fiber, it's low in carbs. I've tried other cereals but usually, if they're got a lot of fiber, it also throws my glucose reading out of whack. Also, my son isn't fond of 'flake' cereals as they get mushy too fast, so rather than buying 3 or 4 different cereals (at $4 or whatever per box), we just go with one or two that we can all eat. I'll just throw a smattering of raisins into any cereal and make my own - you might want to consider just getting an all-bran or bran flakes type cereal and add your own raisins.
