Creating a shopping list from menus
Posted Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 9:34 AM

Hello All!!

I am so excited about starting this kickstart! I was looking through the 21 Dat Meal Plan and printed out the menu's for this week. Also, in the body of the text it stated that there was the ablility to print out a shopping list from whatever menu's I wanted to use. It state:

"If you would like to compile a
detailed grocery list from our NutritionMD.org recipes only, please register here
and type in the recipes you want to try. There is a shopping list function that can
compile the ingredients you need."

The "Register here" is in blue and underlined, however, there is no way to click on it, and, I can't find anywhere else on the web site where I am able to do this.

I went to the NutritionMD.org web site, but, the recipes that are on week, one, like, the Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes are not on that site. Am I doint something wrong?

Thanks a lot!

Susan

I clicked on one of the recipes from week one and it takes me to the details and on the left side there is a place that says "Not registered?". Click there to create account. I was disappointed in that feature because it just lists all the items. You may have the same item listed may times. It doesn't lump them together.

You are right. That hyper link "register here" is not working! I'll get that fixed. In the meantime, you can go here http://www.nutritionmd.org/recipes/index.html and register the same way.

From there, you can look around for recipes that seem interesting and add them to a shopping list. The issue with the shopping list, as mentioned above, is that if items don't match exactly, they do not combine. In other words, for example, the program does not recognize the sameness of garlic cloves and minced garlic.

I hope that helps!

I generally just look at the recipe and note the items that we don't normally have (garlic cloves are a staple ingredient here LOL). When I do my grocery list, I use a map of the grocery store to organize the shopping and no automated online helper will do that. It makes the shopping go more quickly and minimizes impulse buys (most of the time) because I can skip entire aisles. I also have a map in my head of the vegetarian food coo-op market we shop at and I compile two lists side by side for shopping at both the regular grocery and the co-op (there are some things we can only get there, like organic spices in the bulk bins - that is, we can get a tablespoon of garam masala or a full jar of cream of tartar, whatever quantities we need/use).

Funny side note: when our old fridge fell apart (literally, the door came off in hubby's hands!) we got a nice shiny new one. On a hunch, I took a dry erase marker to the smooth white face of the door AND it works! So, we use dry erase markers to note on the fridge door when we're out/close to out of things. I can use that to start the grocery list, then add items for the menu of the week, and add any special items we need (for example, if we need to place an order for wheat before we run too low).
