where to find nutritional yeast?
Posted Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 7:41 AM

I looked at Whole Foods near the regular baking yeast and did not see it. I also looked in the refrigerated section near the say cheeses.

Where would I find nutritional yeast in a store??
Thanks!

Whole Foods, I think it's in the spice aisle. Not really with the spices, but a bit down from the spices in that aisle. Also, look in the bulk foods. Some stores carry it there. Red Star is the brand I buy. There is also a product called "Parma" that uses nutritional yeast and some other things to create a sprinkle type "cheese" that has a taste similar to parmesan. It's very good. Actually I have never cared much for parmesan cheese, but I do like the Parma Chipolte Cayenne.

Nutritional yeast flakes can hide in a variety of aisles. At Whole Foods and at my local health food store, I can find it in the bulk section, along with the grains and beans. I've also seen it in the baking section which is a mystery to me.

I would simply ask. And be sure you say Nutritional yeast, otherwise someone may point to brewer's yeast.

I asked at the co-op market and it was in the bulk scoop bins - which is really cool because I can buy a few tablespoons at a time or cups at a time. They keep their baking yeast in the fridge in the produce section and the brewer's yeast with the vitamins and supplements (if I remember that one correctly - I haven't looked for that one in a while).

I have successfully used this online seller for bulk purchases of nutritional yeast.

I had to ask at my local co-op where they keep it. Was surprised to find it in the bulk section refrigerator. I asked and was told that they recommend that it be stored in the fridge. I hadn't heard that before but I do now keep in a tight container in the fridge.

I had to ask for it at Whole Foods and was surprised to be told it was in the nutritional supplements section - near the vitamins.

Make sure that what they told you is for nutritional yeast, not brewer's yeast which is used as a nutritional supplement.

What's the deal with the three different types of yeast anyhow? Anyone know where they come from, why they're different, that sort of info?

Deb - I tried to look up a webpage that explained it all and can't find the one I remember once reading. Basically, the different types of yeast are grown on different "feed" for different purposes. Nutritional yeast is "deactivated". I guess that means it won't cause fermentation or leavening if you add it to dough or juices Question

At Kroger's this weekend in the healthfood section, I found Bragg's brand nutritional yeast next to the organic spices and aluminum-free baking powder. I didn't even know Bragg's made some. I checked and it does contain B12. Even though I'm stocked up thanks to the bulk section at WF, I bought some just to taste test.
