Looking for support - have Atkins husband!
Posted Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Hi everyone. This is my THIRD try at the kickstart program. My husband has been on Atkins for over 1 year. He has lost 60 pounds. He has another 50 pounds to lose. His cholesterol levels and blood pressure are good so far... I do well on the program for the 21 days, but the rest of the time, it's just easier on all fronts to cave in and it's very hard to resist the pressure (not from him - he's great - but from friends, family and restaurant outings, plus I cave in when I'm tired, hungry, stressed). I'm going into this for the third time a little depressed - I feel I won't even make the 21 days. It would be great to have one or two people in the same boat - we could lift each other up. Any takers?

Hey! Sorry you are bummed. This is my 3rd try, I didn't make it the other 2 times. I look after my elderly parents and Mom has gotten sick both times. I have a plan for this time so I don't get derailed. I also do most of the cooking in the house where they are all meat eaters but me but nothing like having to face that Atkins food. At least I can make enough sides for my meal!

Does your husband cook his meals himself or do you have to cook that as well?

I think I remember you from last time - you like to cook as I recall. So do I. My worst time of the day is when I'm getting hungry -around 4 pm CST - I live in northern Illinois. So the best thing I can do for myself and my husband is to make most of our dinner in the a.m. I wish I was disciplined enough to eat a salad every night, like my sister - garbaged up with everything I like. How does your day usually fall out?

Yep, that's my trigger time too. I have about an hour (more this time of year) commute home from work, go directly to the parent's house to fix them dinner, chat, hear about their day, sit with them while they eat, then leave to go to my home (just a few doors down). If I'm not vigilant I will be into cheese and crackers at their house before I get to dinner at my own home!

I've got a couple of plans in mind.

-I can have some soup at work before I leave. We have a fridge with a freezer in our office, so thought I would just take some of my frozen soups to work so they are always available.

-If I get away early enough, I can swing by my house and eat, then go to their home.

-I can also take my dinner to their house to eat it there. They are in their 90's and are NOT open to eating vegetarian much less vegan so they won't eat what I'm eating. (I also won't eat what they like, so it's a 2-way street! lol)

You are right, I DO like to cook, so if I am organized I usually get food done for the week.

I fixed the Beans and Greens (with a tweak or 2) last night and have some veggie curry going in the crock pot now. I will fix a big pot of brown rice when I fix dinner tonight so I will have that for the week. If the curry doesn't turn out I've got vegan spaghetti sauce and whole wheat spaghetti as a back up. The beans/greens and curry would be easy to take down to their house or to nuke quickly at mine.

I wish I were like your sister too!! If I have *just* salad for dinner, then I feel like I'm on a diet and I HATE diets!!! Rolling Eyes I also like hot food when it is cold and gray outside. I'm in N. Idaho and it's still dark when I get home.

Are you able to fix things both of you can eat? I've never done Atkins (well except in college in 1970 the first time it came out!) but it's lo carb isnt it, which doesn't go with all the variety of things we can eat. Is he allowed spaghetti sauce? Thinking non-meat spaghetti sauce over chicken for him, over whole wheat pasta for you.

I live in a very rural town so no grocery stores with delis available. Is that an option for you?

I am very fortunate - I live about 40 miles NW of Chicago so I have Whole Foods and Trader Joes near me. So I can get organic or gourmet anytime I want to drive 15-20 miles. Are you near Couer d'alene - we drive through there everytime we go to visit my family in Seattle- with tire chains in the winter through snoqualmie pass! I can appreciate your desire for fresh food that way north! If you would be willing, we could email each day, to support each other in this endeavor. I have contacted pcrm to see if we can email each other separately from the forum - it would be easier and so much more fun to have a few of us supporting each other during the next 3 weeks...

That would be fine. I can't promise a response every day but I will be happy for the support as well! I think we can PM, and send regular e-mail addresses that way. I'll give it a try!
