fighting Candida
Posted Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 11:08 AM

I went off being Vegan. Went back to Vegetarian. I was not following any plan. And this Candida took over. I found a holistic dr. and have some good supplements. That are helping. I am also off white flour, sugar, and cheese to help get me over this. I want to go back to being Vegan. My mind keeps pulling at me but I can't seem to do it. I try and make at least 2 meals a day Vegan. I wonder if I can work it out to 3. Why can't I give up tuna, salmon, turkey and chicken and yogurt? I feel like I am hooked on them. Red meat is no problem and I am grateful for that. I need all your help. I want to get off the other meat.
Funny thing is, giving up the cheese was no problem. I didn't drink milk so the only thing that I still need to get over is the yogurt.
Help please. Confused

What is it about those foods that is attractive? Color, flavor, texture, social associations (like salmon is what you and someone special ate on your first date so it has a feel-good association), etc. Then, look at ways to meet the underlying need in a vegan way. For instance, if you pulse a bunch of cooked chickpeas in the food pro once or twice (just enough to break them down but not pureed like hummus) and add mayo sub, diced onion and celery, it's a lot like tuna salad.

Yogurt was a hard one when I did the Sept kickstart. I kept to my one yogurt per day the whole time. Then, after the kickstart ended, I went grocery shopping and I had to make some budget choices and chose to skip the yogurts for that week, put the yogurt back on the shopping list, same thing again the next week. After a couple weeks of choosing not to buy it, I didn't miss it much anymore.

I have seen many recipes that are faux tuna (I have not tried them as I never ate fish) so I cannot comment on them. As for the others gardenia is a great chicken substitute.

Try changing one at a time and see how that goes...sometimes the pressure to change at once is overwhelming and we tend to revert to old habits....

Good luck!

Yogurt was hard for me, too. I started using low-fat silken tofu from Mori-Nu as a substitute, added some chia seeds, processed in the food processor or blender, and added some Splenda or Stevia, let it chill in the fridge for a few hours. Found that to be a great substitute.

As far as meat, all I had to do was watch "Earthlings." I don't ever want to eat meat again. Sure, I am tempted sometimes. There are meats that I know taste or smell good, but there are *so many* delicious vegan replacements that are MORE healthy and better for your body ... you really are BETTER OFF being vegan! Better for your health, better for the planet, better for the animals, just better! Very Happy

Most important, remember that we love you and want to support you. We're here to help, anytime you need.

Thank you all for your help and support. I got all choked up. Really. I will try the things and ideas you suggested. I know that eating meat is not good for my health. The movie that pushed me before was "Happy Feet". I cried for hrs. after watching that. Silly but maybe I need to watch that one again.
Thank you all again. I knew I'd find my support here. Smile
