Menopause and weight loss
Posted Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 7:43 AM

I have done great on this vegan diet. I can't believe I did so well. I lost a few pounds. The reason I started is because it has been so hard to lose weight since I am perimenopausal @ 56! My middle section and thighs have balloned! Do the hormonal changes affect the weight loss on the vegan diet? Embarassed

Yes, hormonal changes affect your weight on any diet!

Key to managing weight shifts during menopause are to eat high quality (which PCRM guidelines will do for you just fine) AND to remain active. Be sure to challenge your muscle. Our metabolism doesn't just naturally change with getting older or menopause - it is lack of challenge to the muscle that does it!

You may experience a slight gain anyway during transition, though FAR less than what you might experience with sloppy eating and sedentary living! Then if you are consistent with good habits, will find that eventually drops again after your body settles in to new homeostasis.

Working with your health care provider on your hormonal profile may be helpful for many reasons as well.

Eat well, stay active, and trust the process!
