vegan to lose weight?

Hi there
I am new here and I have a few q's is it a good way to lose weight? Is it slow coming off ? I know being vegan has alot of health benefits to it so I am wanting to try to learn how to do it correctly Razz TY for any info Smile

I followed sept kickstart fairly close. I did not add oils to fry in. If hungry I just ate more of what was on the menu that day. If I wanted a snack not on the menu, I reached for fruit.

My chloresterol went down drastically. I lost 15 lbs during the kickstart and have continued to lose a little every month thereafter. (20 total now) That being said, this is from a gal who didn't lose ANYTHING for years, even tho i exercised. I thought my body just really liked whatever weight it was at. It was stuck. My body is really good at staying put.

That being said.. I still do exercise an hour a day at least 5 days a week. Now it is a little more intense than it was before, cause i feel better and can do more.
I think eating vegan is a healthy way to find your ideal weight naturally. I would suggest following the kickstart closely. If you find a recipe you don't like just eat one from another day that you do like.

I am following a plant-based diet first and foremost to reverse some health problems, and also to lose weight. I find that when I follow a low-fat vegan diet (no added oils of any kind), without doing anything else, I lose about 1 pound per week. I have a lot to lose, but I am trying to do it slowly and purposfully this time around. I want to change my lifestyle forever, not just for the duration of a "diet."

I eat as much as I need to be satisfied, and eat whenever I am hungry. It was hard to learn what "satisfied" means. To me, it means not stuffed to the gills, but pleasantly full. It was also hard to learn what true hunger is. I'm still trying to figure out what real hunger feels like.

A bit of a funny story.. This may sound weird... but really... when eating sad.. one time i heard my tummy growl.. and it scared me..I really and truely stopped and said to myself, "what the heck was that?" i had not heard that sound in so long i didn't remember what it was at first.. I did have to laugh.. what was my eating coming to when i didn't remember that sound?

i am not making fun of anyone.. i am serious..

i think tho..it is better not to get to that point.. cause that is where I start saying.. those chips or that candy looks good till i can get real food.

I am trying to lose weight ... I've really packed on the pounds recently and can't wear some of my favorite clothes. I actually had to go out to a local outlet store and buy a pair of jeans that would fit ... huge reality check for me! So my first weight loss goal is to get too thin for those jeans which I bought right before Christmas .... they are size 12. I only paid $7.87 for them at the outlet, so will have no trouble bidding them a fond adieu. Two years ago, I was wearing an 8. That is a comfortable size for me, and where I want to be.

I actually found a good use for a pair of jeans that's about 3 sizes too big for me - I put them on over a pair of sweatpants when I went out to help hubby shovel out the driveway after the blizzard last week. I was nice and toasty warm and the extra room in the jeans meant it wasn't bulky and uncomfortable.

I wasn't quite as strict in following the September kickstart - did use some oils for cooking (mostly small amounts of olive oil) - and still I lost 1-2 lbs per week. The cool thing was that even though I strayed a bit over this holiday season (but not too far - mostly into more general vegetarian territory), I was able to maintain that 8 lb weight loss this whole time. I'm quite content with losing 8 lbs, maintain it a bit, lose some more, etc. pattern. Basically, it provides time for me to get used to how it feels and what feels right for me (since everyone is different).

Along the way, my hubby - the head chef in our house - has lost a BUNCH of weight by cooking vegan meals and experimenting with new foods and recipes. He's awesome! He knows I love quiche (but I couldn't eat it even before the kickstart because eggs mess up my digestion) so he pulled out a quiche recipe from the Veganomicon (spinach and navy beans!) and that was my treat for Christmas breakfast!

And my 12 yr old son has an amazing range to his palate - he loves things like rainbow chard, bok choy, lentils, etc. Neither hubby nor son would self-describe as vegans (son is more omnivore, hubby hates to pigeonhole himself to any one category) but when we're at home, they're on the vegan end of vegetarian most of the time.

I followed the September quickstart quite closely, and I lost little to no weight and I do have quite a bit to lose. So this time, I am going to follow the plan, and eat smaller portions. I also am going to try to be more faithful to exercise which usually is the key for me! We have stayed off of meat and dairy since the last kickstart, until the Holidays that is. Time to get back to healthier eating.

As to weight loss, it may or may not be a good way to lose weight. The why is simple. If you eat chocolate pie, lots of pudding, cakes, candy, breads, foods with lots of oil, pasta and the like, you won't lose.

It is harder to eat 1500 calories of whole grains, unprocessed foods than it is to pack it in with a veal Parmesan and spaghetti with a rich white sauce on the side followed up by a tiarmisu and ice cream. So yes, eating vegan would generally make you lose weight.

You can still get some pretty hefty calorie numbers when you eat an Amy's Vegan pizza with a pasta bean and quinoa salad on the side followed by Tofutti and Amy's vegan chocolate cake. The first meal isn't vegan, the second is both pack high numbers.

The key is your food choices and how unprocessed you choose to eat. At the end of the day it is still calories in and calories out.

I am definitely doing this to lose weight but also to get healthy again (Primary goal). I have passed the 200 pound mark and am only 5'5". Three busy children, single mom, too much SAD, not enough time and here I am.
When I was raw vegan years ago and still in my 30's (getting close to 50 now), I felt better than I had ever felt in my life, including when being an athlete in high school and college. I want to get back there and this is a good place to start.
We have maintained vegetarian diet but only in the sense of not eating animal products, not in the healthy vegi sense of lots of good food. It is sad when a vegetarian diet can be just as much a SAD as a carnivore diet. Yikes.

I forgot to note for those interested in the weight loss, you may want to use a tool like the Livestrong site's daily plate which lets you count the calories of what you are eating, shows you your eating pattern because you can record by meals, snacks and times of day, plus it lets you know how much protein, fats, salt, carbs you are eating. I also record my recipes for nutrition per serving as well as meals I have on a regular basis so I don't have to retype the same thing I have all the time. Example is my breakfast. I have an oatmeal breakfast meal and a cornflake breakfast meal. All I have to do is pick the meal and it is recorded.

i'm doing this for a variety of reasons, but primarily to be healthier and lose weight. My husband and i are adopting a baby and i want to be able to be an active mom!

i had gastric bypass surgery 18 months ago and lost 131 lbs...i have gained 26 lbs back; that *cannot* happen---i don't ever want to go back to where i was before surgery. I still need to lose 120 lbs, so i'm hoping this food plan will get the ball rolling!

Hi everyone,

I am also doing the kickstart to lose some weight, as well as feel better. I have about 60# to lose Embarassed

In 2008 I joined WW with a friend and did pretty well by losing 22 lbs. Then I lost my focus and went off plan, while my friend continued on and got to goal weight last Apr. I was so angry with myself for having given up, let me tell you. This past year I have gained about 11 lbs back, and just dawdled around. But I am so happy to find this kickstart challenge and do it together with you all!!

I have had 1 foot in the vegan lifestyle for awhile now, so it is not going to be too difficult for to to stick with it, esp. when I start to feel better.

Hi Pam and everyone,

Just in case you guys didn't know there is also a cook book by Doctor Barnard that can be purchase on amazon.com (hope that isn't a silly comment but I didn't see it posted any where).

Also for those who need more variety in recipes, if you go to the search engine and type in vegan this or that recipe (depending on what you're looking for, for example I typed in a vegan recipe using barley and found a salad that I'm getting ready to make) you will find some out there. I thought that this would be a good idea since the program promotes trying out own recipes.

Good luck to everyone no matter what your reasons are for starting, I think that we can all lose weight on it and promote health at the same time.

I definitely have some weight to lose - but I'm trying to follow the plan without obsessing over the scale. It's hard to do because I feel a bit like a "programmed dieter" and I really want to break out of that cycle. I'm so used to counting calories, points, carbs - you name it. Then hopping on the scale and eventually just getting frustrated and disappointed.

I really believe a whole-foods, vegan diet will help me break free! If the weight comes off slowly, that's totally fine with me. I just don't want to stress out about it anymore. I probably have 30-40lbs to lose - and if it takes me a year or longer, I am going to be fine with that.

I too am using Kickstart to lose weight as well as gain control of my blood sugars. To me the weight loss will help get the sugars in check. I have lost and gained so many pounds all my life that my poor body is downright refusing to lose. I did not weigh this morning and will not until after the 21 days as I gained so much over holidays and am afraid of being discouraged. That said, as soon as my pants are loose again, even if before the 21 days I will weigh. I am so mad at what I have done to my body over the years, am 52, that I am going to do my best to stick with this. I have 20 to lose to get to the Dr's goal but at least 30 to reach what I consider an ideal weight for me.

The cookbook is also available from Powells. I searched and it was the first to pop up in their search. I like them because if I buy 25 dollars worth of books the shipping is free. Which might be why I have such a huge pile of cookbooks in the kitchen now. And they directly sell used books too. I have a lot of Vegan cookbooks on a send me a message when a used copy comes in list they have.

I decided to adopt a vegan lifestyle because I wanted some kind of a 'diet' which will not have the yo-yo effects. Also after going completely vegan for the last 13 months, I have noticed

1. Increased energy
2. Clearer skin
3. Of course losing the excess weight
4. More compassion towards animals in the true sense.

Most amazing thing was that around 6-7 months ago, my bf decided to adopt this lifestyle and there has been no looking back. I enjoy the fact that I feel active and just eating the right things makes me feel really good about myself!
