Why do some recipes require soaking nuts? Is this added step truly necessary & what is the nutritional benefit?

Soaking nuts can help make the nutrients more bioavailable. Is it necessary? I guess it depends on the recipe. If you are going to blend nuts into a raw dish, it might be easier if the nuts had been soaked.
