Soy Yogurt?
Posted Monday, January 3, 2011 at 1:31 PM

Hey everyone!

I'm starting the kickstart today, and I picked up soy yogurt at the grocery store yesterday.

I purchased Stonyfield's O'Soy yogurt, and after I took a couple of bites, I read on the label that it contains milk! The live cultures are derived from dairy.

What is your favorite soy yogurt? I read some reviews online, and WholeSoy tends to be a favorite. Do you know of any other non-vegan brands to avoid?

Thanks!
Jamie

Wholesoy flavors are very good but high in sugar (it's not all from fruit, they add cane juice) so I only eat that as an occasional treat. I use Wildwood plain soy yogurt for cooking and I also eat it as a snack sweetened with Stevia and some fresh fruit.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

When I do buy yogurt, becuase there are only a few kinds available I only get the one I know I like from Olympia Soyogurt. But really its just ok so I dont get is very often.

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we should dance Smile

We've tried all the brands that are available in our area, and the best tasting and consistency one was Stonyfield, but we got caught by the milk revelation too! And I don't mind telling ya all, some of the ones highly recommended by different websites tasted HORRID, including the one made from coconut milk! Sooo...that leaves me wondering if somehow I can make my own. Thought about maybe finding a way to make it from Almond milk. Don't know where to begin. May take a while to research it and find out if and how. Shocked

Most of the soy yogurt I've tasted has been really terrible. I've bought Silk Live! and WholeSoy & Co. yogurts, and they both say "dairy-free" on the label. I never eat it by itself, but I do like it in soups and smoothies. I'd like to know, too, if there is some way to make soy yogurt at home. I have used a yogurt maker in the past, but I have a feeling it would not work with soy or plant milk. Any answers out there? Confused

We were wondering the same thing too - about making our own. I can't handle that much soy (as in soy yogurt) in a food product and the coconut milk one I tried was not a satisfying texture and kind of cloying. I've looked up how to make ypgurt before and the big sticking point seems to be keeping it at a constant temp for the right length of time. Don't really have enough counter space for a "unitasker" like a yogurt maker (if it could do other things too, that would be different) and all the other methods (box and heating pad; crockpot, etc) all seemed to need a lot of 'babysitting'.

We'd prefer to use almond milk, though we could do rice milk for the yogurt if that works better than almond.

I haven't had a soy yogurt that I thought tasted good at all - BUT I do love to bake with plain soy yogurt. It works great for brownie recipes. I've wanted to try making a vegan tzatziki sauce to go with falafel, but haven't had the chance to make it yet.

Try Wholesoy..cherry flavor- only the cherry, its amazing, and yes I tried some of the other flavors...only the cherry. It does have a lot of sugar, but my favorite breakfast is chopped fruit, apple, fresh strawberries, banana and blueberries, topped with a sprinkle of homemade granola, and yogurt. I only use half of the small container of yogurt, which is plenty, to cut down the sugar and calories. This is so good, I have served it for dessert before, no one knew it was soy yogurt.

I saw a recipe for homemade soy yogurt. I think it was in Garden of Vegan (I got it from the library, so I no longer have it). I used to make yogurt with milk. Once it was heated, cooled to 115 degrees and mixed with starter, I put it in a little cooler with a jar of boiling water. If it did not set up after several hours (maybe 5-6?), I would reheat the jar of water. I looked into getting non-dairy starter, but it was pricey. I think I will just buy some plain soy yogurt and use a spoonful of that as a starter.
